If you have visited Bali, you will be familiar with the beautiful offerings, which look like small green baskets containing flowers and other small items inside. These are called Canang Sari.
Canang Sari is part of an important daily offering made by Balinese Hindus. They are small, beautifully arranged baskets made from palm leaves filled with symbolic items such as flowers, rice, incense, and sometimes food like candies or crackers.
The English translation of Canang Sari is essentially "the offering of essence" or "the essence of the offering."
Offerings are part of Balinese culture and are placed at temples, shrines, and even on the streets or in homes. The purpose of the Canang Sari is to express gratitude to the gods, maintain harmony between the spiritual and physical worlds, and ward off evil spirits.
Each element of the offering has its symbolism:
Flowers: Each color represents a specific god or direction.
Incense: Represents the prayers and intentions rising to the heavens.
Rice or food: A gesture of sharing abundance with the gods.
It’s a way for Balinese people to honor the balance between good and evil, life and death, and show their devotion. Making and offering the Canang Sari is central to daily life in Bali.
