🗻High frozen mountains, glittering lakes, the purity of the air: the enchanting landscape of Sils has inspired writers, thinkers, painters and continues to attract those who follow in their footsteps.

🖋 Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the most important figures. It was in Sils that the philosopher got the inspiration for one of his most important works. "Here I feel far better than anywhere else on earth." He found beneficial climatic conditions in the Engadin, which gave him hope of relieving his migraine attacks, often associated with sickness and excruciating eye pain.

🛏️ The house in which he stayed, built at the beginning of the 19th century in the centre of Sils Maria, belonged to the Durisch family and stayed in private ownership for a long time after the philosopher's stays, until the foundation 'Stiftung Nietzsche-Haus in Sils-Maria" established a museum in 1959.

✨It is a small, sober house, as is proper for a philosopher, but it has a stunning view of the lake and mountains that lifts the spirit.

📚 Nietzsche spent most of his summer holidays there from 1882 to 1888 and wrote some of his most important works, of which documents, manuscripts and letters have survived.

📰 The exhibition rooms relate in chronological order to Nietzsche's life. They contain precious objects such as first editions of his works and a small, regularly changing selection of original manuscripts and other everyday objects belonging to the philosopher. A series of panels integrated into the showcases provide information on fundamental concepts and key words in Nietzsche's thought.

💭His first stay in Sils already brought him a fundamental thought, which would give a new direction to all his later philosophy: the 'Thought of the Eternal Return', the basic concept of 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra'.

🏠 He soon called the Upper Engadin "my elective home and creative hotbed", "(where) my muses dwell", and Sils Maria the place where I would like to die one day; but in the meantime it gives me the best motivation to go on living."

🗿 When he died in 1900, a commemorative plaque with verses from Zarathustra was inscribed in his memory on a stone on the Sils peninsula.

We highly recommend a visit to -Haus, Sils-Maria if you love art and philosophy and you want to know more about this thinker.

🛷The Olympia Bob Run from St. Moritz to Celerina is the oldest bobsleigh run and also the only natural ice rink in the world.

It is 1️⃣7️⃣2️⃣2️⃣ meters long and is situated at 1'800 meters above sea level.
In its history, the bobsleigh run has already hosted two Winter Olympics and 24 World Championships.
For more than 130 years now, this ice sculpture in the middle of nature has been inspiring athletes, fans, spectators and vacationers.

⛑ Until the early 1980s, the construction of this impressive runway was in the hands of the local Angelini family, who built it for three generations.
In 1985, Louis Prantl took over responsibility for the construction.
In 1990 he was replaced by Christian Brantschen from Celerina, who is still the supervisor of the project with his construction company.

🏗 Every year, in mid-November, the management begins to look forward to the first snow. In three weeks, the South Tyrolean rail team build the magnificent sculpture of 15,000 m3 snow and 10,000 m3 water in the beautiful natural arena of the Upper Engadin. The slope is built from the ground up every year and although every curve in the land is precisely levelled, there are minimal changes to the layout each year.

❄️No chemicals are used. The Olympia Bob Run in the Engadin is therefore also the most environmentally friendly bob run in the world.

📍 During summer, a hiking trail along the bobsleigh run is marked with information boards. Don’t miss a visit to it if you want to learn all sorts of curiosities and interesting facts about its history.

🌊The area stretched between Surlej and St. Moritz Bad is a series of hills covered in dense woods of pine and larch, with some wonderful lakes hidden in between.

🏞 It is mostly covered with trails, which anyone can hike along in any order to visit all the scenic spots. There are several picnic areas along the way which are useful for a few stops.

👣 Starting from Surlej, take the path that runs alongside Lake Champfèr and climb up to the right towards Lej Marsch (1812 m a.s.l.), the first of the lakes on this panoramic loop. This glacial lake is equipped with benches and diving boards and is therefore often very crowded.

🌲 Follow the path that rises steeply through the trees to reach the Lej Nair (1863 m), which is less popular and less " urbanized" than the previous one. It has exceptional physical, chemical and biological characteristics and has therefore been declared a protected biotope. It extends over a beautiful depression surrounded by the forest.

🔎 If you follow the path, once you have passed the Lej Nair, only a short walk leads you to the tiny Lej Zuppò (1880 m): fed only by melting snow and rain, it tends to dry up in the driest of summers. The toponym, as well as "zupò", means "hidden".

🏔 From Lej Nair, you can also take the path to Lej dals Chöds (or Hahnensee; 2153 m), where there is also a bar and restaurant. This small lake is nestled in a beautiful glacial depression on the upper edge of the coniferous forest. Its water is clear and shallow, and its banks are covered by dense marshland vegetation. The Lej dals Chöds area also offers an enchanting panorama of the peaks that close the Upper Engadine to the north (Piz Nair, Piz Julier, Piz Polaschin).

🔀 From here, if you take the path towards Surlej and make a very short deviation, you can also pay a visit to Lej Ovis-chel (1793 m).

👀 This is perhaps the most beautiful of the named sites. It is located in a deep and secluded valley, although it is only a 5-minute walk from the village of Surlej. It is surrounded by thick forests and overlooked by the Crastatscha ridge, which rises with rocky walls and dense larch forests.

👣 In the Diavolezza area, close to the Italian borders, a hike that should not be missed is the one to the "Lej da Diavolezza": a panoramic tour with a minimal overall height difference and medium difficulty.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦These features make it suitable for everyone, including families. In fact, it lasts about 1 hour and 45 minutes and covers 5.6 kilometres.

🚠The Lej da Diavolezza is a route that starts from the station at the top of the Diavolezza cable car, passing by the arrival station of the Diavolezza chairlift and skirting the crest of Sass Queder.

👀This is an easy excursion, but one that will give you an enchanting view of the turquoise-coloured lake and the panorama of the Bernina lakes below.

🚃And for all those coming from the surrounding area, the walks on the Diavolezza can also be combined in the best possible way with the attraction of the red train, as one of the Bernina Express stops at the bottom of the cable car.

👣One of the most scenic hikes in the Upper Engadin is the Water Trail, a loop trail on the Furtschellas that links six small, beautiful mountain lakes in a summer hike with a breathtaking view.

🚠Starting at the Furtschellas top station (2313 m.a.s.l.), the water trail runs for 2 hours and a half, first to Alp Munt and then back to the station on the other side, all around the six small mountain lakes, named after the minerals and stones in their waters: Lejin Cristal, Lejin Magnetit, Lejin Malachit, Lejin Rhodonit, Lejin S-chaglia and Lejin Epidot.

A shortened variant leads directly to Lejin Malachit, Lejin Rhodonit, Lejin S-chaglia and Lejin Epidot, allowing you to avoid the steep climb at the beginning of the tour.

⛰During your hike you will be permanently accompanied by the rocky peaks of the Corvatsch massif and the spectacular view of the lakes at the bottom of the valley, that the highland offers.

🌊The Water Trail is the perfect summer trip: enjoy the magic of the sparkling mountain lakes and the beauty of the Engadin sky reflected in the water of these six enchanting little lakes.

🏛This small monographic museum, with its beautiful and unusual shape, can be reached by walking along the Segantini Trail through the forest as an alternative to the classic road.

⛰This is the Segantini Museum St. Moritz. The style of the building, which stands on a small hill, is reminiscent of a mausoleum, but also tells of the work and soul of Giovanni Segantini, the great innovator of Alpine painting, who arrived in Maloja in 1894 at the age of 34 and lived and worked here until the end of his days.

✏️The museum is based on Segantini's own design for the pavilion of the 1900 Paris Expo, which he did not attend.

🖼Two small rooms on the first floor present a few of the artist's works, but the most important room is the one on the upper floor: the light from the circular cupola illuminates the evocative triptych inspired by the Alps. Three huge works that represent the essence of the artist's works and symbolism: the well-known triptych of life, nature and death.

🎖The few but majestic and impressive works featured here pay tribute to the master of Divisionism through a cultural stop-off that no art lover should miss on his trip to the Engadin.
