Playa Brava (Fierce Beach), one of Uruguay’s very best beaches, features excellent waves and a spacious shoreline that make it a coveted venue for lovers of water sports such as surfing and paddle-boarding. The many hotels along the coastline cater both to those participating in surfing tournaments, competitive volleyball, or other sports activities; and to sunbathers and swimmers just relaxing in this Uruguayan Punta del Este classic. Another highlight of Playa Brava is “Los Dedos” (The Fingers) artistic landmark created by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal; a giant sculpture of a hand that seems to be emerging from the sand. A little further down south along the peninsula are other smaller beaches that widen up visitors options. Canoes were the primary means of transportation of many of the native peoples of Uruguay. Among these were the Guaraní people, who left a rich legacy of native names given to different geographical features they discovered when navigating through their land. Aiguá (Running Water), Batoví (Virgin’s Bosom), Cebollatí (River of Onions), Cuareim (River that Sprouts from a Hole) and, of course, Uruguay, which means “River of the Painted Birds”, are all words with Guaraní origins that are used nowadays. Enjoy a Canoe adventure on Estancia Anastasio’s Lagoon, sailing across natural reserves and appreciating the enormous variety of birds that live in its surroundings. You may even spot some mammals, such as capybaras, armadillos, or one of the shy deer that live in the native forests around. Gleaming white in the sun and cascading thirteen stories down a cliffside, Casapueblo, Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró’s exuberantly whimsical villa, hotel, workshop and art gallery, sits atop Punta Ballena, a jutting headland 15km west of Punta del Este. A maze of rooms and terraces, this South American landmark is more like a small Greek village than a house. The Workshop Museum operates in the center of the great construction and exhibits the works of this multifaceted artist and muralist par excellence, featuring paintings, ceramics and sculptures made at different stages of his artistic career. Along the route, through five rooms and three terraces, the concept of handcrafted architecture is perceived in its passageways, paths, archways, or embedded objects in its walls. Visitors may watch a film on the artist’s life and travels, and savor spectacular sunset views at the upstairs cafeteria-bar. The beautiful Hotel L’Auberge is a peaceful sanctuary in the tranquility of Parque del Golf residential neighborhood, just 2 blocks from Brava Beach in Punta del Este, Uruguay. In general terms, November through March, during summertime in the southern hemisphere, is always a great time to plan a visit, but you might also consider July or August if you prefer crisper weather and wintry landscapes. Although there is warmth and longer days both on the Chilean and Argentine sides during summertime, night frosts and sleet can occur in the highlands even during warm season… Such are the ways of Patagonia, extreme and radical year-round!
