On the vast sheep and cattle ranches in southern Patagonia spring sees the arrival of thousands of Lambs. On the Cerro Guido Estancia ( ranch ) which is located close to the Torres del Paine National Park, the Gauchos, their trusty horses and sheep dogs have a lot to contend with.

The spring will see the Ewes shorn of their wool, then when that task is complete the flocks will be driven by the Gauchos across the vast landscape to their summer grazing pastures higher up. The manager of the Cerro Guido lodge told me over a coffee just before the sheering process started that with this years new arrivals of lambs the number of sheep being driven is 17,000.

The ranchers accept the Pumas in the area will pick some off, in the not too distant past, the simple answer was for a Leonero to saddle up his horse gets the dogs ready and head off in to the landscape and shoot the Puma (s). Luckily for the Pumas, at least on the Cerro Guido Estancia attitudes have changed. One has to remember, sheep were introduced to Patagonia by the Scots and British from the Falkland Islands, so as far as the Pumas were concerned it was like a Mc Donald’s opened up suddenly, and they did not have to pay!

Spring feast in Patagonia.

The floor of the Nothofagus pumillo ( Lenga Beech ) forests are strewn with wild flowers in spring. The harsh winter has finally ended and the forest awakens.

To sit atop a mountain anywhere along the Andes mountain chain, and being 4,300 miles long (7,000 km ) that’s a lot of mountain tops, and watch these leviathans if the sky is an incredible pleasure.

They move so fast and are incredibly agile for such a large winged bird. You really need to concentrate when trying to pan your camera and lenses, especially when you are close to the edge of a sheer rock face in order to get them when they cruise close to it as they ride the thermals rising up it or are coming into land at a roosting or nest location. I won’t divulge how many images and footage clips I shot that were near perfect except for the fact I clipped the tip of the wing out, the head or the last bits of the tail, trust me there were plenty, but thankfully I took some crackers like this one🙏

The Última Esperanza Fjord ( Last Hope Sound ) with the glacier clad Balmaceda in the background and even further away on the right hand side is the glacier clad Paine Grande , the tallest peak in the Torres del Paine National Park massif.

Soaring Leviathan

This giant of the Andes airspace is not done justice on a cell phone screen, so I will of course upload these to my website on my return to the UK, sadly that day is fast approaching, after a month in Patagonia, I will be back.

Postcards from Patagonia

Whose a pretty young male Condor! The males have a prominent comb or carbuncle on the head and sport brown eyes, they also have dewlaps which are folds of skin on the neck. These folds become bigger and more wrinkled with age. It takes 8 years and several moults before the bird attains it’s full black and white feathers.

Postcards from Patagonia

A bit of wing detail from above. You have to get above the Condors to make it interesting, because the underside of a bird is more difficult to expose correctly unless they are in a nice angled turn and it’s all exposed to early morning or late afternoon early evening light. By making the effort to get high on the hills and mountains above where they roost, nest and obviously soar is well with the sweat when one gets to see them cruise right under your lens🙏.

A little selection from my days efforts up above Lake Sofia down in deepest Patagonia. The Magellanic Woodpecker is the worlds biggest and the male sports a magnificent red head, as for the Condor it may not be the prettiest bird in the world, especially the male, but they are magnificent to watch and film. I was sitting on top of the mountain yesterday and a male landed 20 ft away from me, and kindly posed for a portrait.

Some days just start with a bang!

I was walking the trail up to one of my regular spots to film when I caught the tip of a Condor wing just go out of sight near the rock face, had to investigate. Crawled over to the edge and found this trio chilling. The early sun was warming up and they decided to air and dry the their wings after the previous nights rain.

The grin on my face must have been worth more than the Mona Lisa😂. I crawled back to get my drone and set it to hover, and for anyone freaking out about it being too close, my finger was on the reverse stick at all times, but in all honesty the 3 of them did not give a hoot and sat their soaking up the sun for 15 mins.

A gloriously clear and virtually wind free day in southern Chile’s Xll region allowed me to get some much needed filming and photographing done.

The ice clad peaks of the Southern Patagonian Icecap make for a beautiful backdrop for the huge Condors that are keeping me busy, weather permitting.

Photographing birds in flight is not always easy, it is very rewarding when you get it right. Patagonia is a great place for Condors and these last few days I have been busy with these aerial Leviathans at a Lake near Puerto Natales.

Off to Torres del Paine National Park to hopefully get some@of the birds with the iconic Paine massif behind. Also I am hoping to get some film and stills of a female Puma with 3 five week old cubs that is rearing them@close to my old camp on previous trips.

Big Birds

It is an incredible experience have these monsters with a 9ft (3m) wingspan fly right over you as a couple did on my first day of filming and photographing. They came within 15ft of my head at great speed but I would have needed a very wide angle lens to capture an image the 2 above were taken with a 200mm- 800mm Leica zoom.

I am off the scale excited to be returning to my favourite place on earth, chomping at the bit to get to Heathrow for the 14 hour flight to Santiago and the connecting flight south to deepest Patagonia.

Still 6 weeks before my flight 😂 .

Going to be heading to a couple of locations to film Condors soaring and in their nest with the Offspring and of course the Pumas. The image in this post is of the first Puma I ever saw. The encounter happened at dusk, I was alone, still 2 hours from camp and suddenly noticed the tiniest movement on a rock, it was the cats ears moving ever so slightly, I can’t explain the mixed feeling or fear and emotion at the time. A few seconds after I took the shot ( Fuji 100 ASA slide film pushed 2 stops 300mm F2.8 Nikon &2 x converter Handheld ) I noticed the cat look in my general direction, but it was not me it was looking at ! Several metres behind me on the grassy slope, staring at me was its sibling. I was now alone with 2 large P***y cats. I watched them join up ahead of me jumping all over one another and not giving me a second thought, a comforting thought let me tell you, but it was a long scary walk back to camp on Lake Sarmiento.
