Everyone knows that Chile is long and skinny, but how many people know that Chile, which is 5% larger than Texas, is longer from north to south than the distance from Washington, D.C, to San Francisco, California? Chile boasts the driest desert in the world, a reserve in the extreme south that international conservationists rightfully call “the most beautiful national park in the world”, and the alarming archaeological remains of an impressive but now extinct civilization that shone briefly before literally flaming out on a remote island that lies smack dab in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, fully a five-hour jet flight west of the Chilean capital of Santiago.

Since 2012, December 4 has been "World Wildlife Conservation Day". That's why we're here: to talk about the importance of environmental conservation. Often it has been more profitable in the short term to destroy forests than to protect them. Therefore, we need to move the needle to change that calculus in favor of forest conservation. SouthWild actively supports conservation. In fact, Southwild's founding owner is a conservation biologist who led teams that created 15 million acres of new protected areas in the Amazon rainforest, an area equivalent to 1/6th of the state of California. Here is a young mother Puma with her cubs in Pumaland, adjacent to Torres del Paine National Park. We saw this mother Puma grow up with her mother in the same set of rolling hills, and now she has little cubs of her own. The mother and cubs shared a Guanaco that the mom had hunted.

PumaLab is the research base of SouthWild in "PumaLand". Our Puma Trackers and Puma Guides and logistical staff and cooks will all stay there for most of the year to be in the middle of the action.

"PumaLand" is the name that SouthWild coined for the especially "Puma-rich" 25,000 acres of open, rolling hills on the eastern edge of the Torres del Paine National Park. SouthWild keeps a unique Puma ID guide of the 23 individual Pumas who live and hunt in PumaLand. Everyone wants our ID guide, but it is available only through SouthWild.
