Another Ranger Assassinated in Cameroon

One more ranger has been brutally assassinated on the frontline of duty by suspected poachers inside Faro National Park in the North Region of Cameroon. Ngamagnine Mathieu, 27, died arm in hand, over the weekend, when yet-to-be identified assailants attacked an advanced base where he and other colleagues were on guard some 5 km from the borders with Nigeria. He was married and a father of two kids.

Ngamagnine is the fourth victim of poachers in Faro National Park in three years. In 2013, poachers assassinated three community guards inside the park. Our hearts go to the family of this valiant ranger who sacrificed his life to protect the last vestige of savannah elephants in the North of Cameroon.

At 3.6 million hectares, Salonga National Park in DR Congo is Africa's largest protected area of dense rainforest. It is so remote that it can be accessed only by water or air. WWF is co-managing the park together with the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN).

Despite its enormous size and isolation, Salonga is confronted to an ivory poaching and trafficking crisis, as well as uncontrolled bushmeat hunting and fishing. Almost 300 eco-guards are on the frontlines of the anti-poaching fight here.

Some facts about our part of the world

1. The Congo region is 300,000 square miles (777,000 square kilometres) in size.
2. The area experiences a population increase of 1.7 million people each year creating a demand for food, fuel and shelter at a great cost to the forest.
3. Congo Basin forests span six countries: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of Congo.
4. The Congo Basin, second in size only to the mighty Amazon, loses close to 1.5 million hectares of forest cover every year. This amounts to about one-third of the 4 million hectares of forest destruction Africa experiences each year - an area roughly twice the size of Belgium.
5. The Democratic Republic of Congo is the largest country in the Congo Basin and contains 12.5 percent of the world’s remaining tropical rainforest.
6. Seven countries hold 60 per cent of the planet’s forests: Brazil, Canada, China, Indonesia, Russian Federation, United States and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
7. The forests of the Congo Basin contain the greatest number of mammals, primates, birds, amphibians, fish and swallowtail butterflies in Africa. More than a 1,000 species of bird can be found here.
8. The Congo Basin is the only place to shelter all three subspecies of gorilla: the lowland gorilla, the endemic eastern lowland gorilla and the endangered mountain gorilla.
9. 50 per cent of the Congo Basin forest has now been allocated for logging.
10. The Congo River that flows through the forest is the second largest river in the world

The amazing work of conservation and habituation at Dzanga Sangha... lets go meet them in the heart of darkness; in the heart of the congo basin.

“These are the first twins ever recorded in Dzanga-Sangha and their birth is an incredible moment for everyone who has worked so hard to habituate and conserve these gorillas over the past 16 years.” - WWF’s David Greer. Read more: http://wwf.to/1SbRbjt
