When people think about winter in Tibet, they often imagine it’s too cold for travel. However, living here year-round, we know it's not as cold as people think. In winter, Tibet enjoys bright sunshine, clear air, and a blue sky. It's a less busy time, so you’ll find fewer tourists and more friendly locals. I highly recommend visiting Tibet in winter. Except for areas like Mount Kailash and Namtso Lake, where heavy snow can block roads and make travel difficult, other places like Lhasa, Shigatse, and Everest Base Camp have daytime temperatures around 10°C (50°F). It’s usually sunny, and you’re more likely to see stunning sunrises and sunsets at Everest, which are harder to see in summer. Some people worry about altitude sickness in winter, but it’s not a big issue. Just stay hydrated and be prepared. If you’re planning a winter trip to Tibet, consider joining our 8-day classic tour from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp. We run tours every week, and we can start with just one person. Prices are very reasonable. Contact us for more details.

The Shoton Festival, also known as the Tibetan Opera Festival or the Buddha Exhibition Festival, is a traditional festival of the Tibetan people, mainly celebrated among the Tibetan people in Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan and other provinces.
The name of this festival means "Yoghurt Feast" in Tibetan, where "Sho" refers to yogurt, and "Ton" means feast or eating, so Shoton Festival is a festival for eating yogurt. The Shoton Festival celebrations usually take place between the 30th of June and to 6th of July in the Tibetan calendar, lasting seven days.
The origin of the Shoton Festival is related to the religious activities of Tibetan Buddhism. According to the regulations of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the 15th of June to the 30th day of July in the Tibetan calendar every year is a forbidden period. During this period, monks are not allowed to go out to avoid stepping on insects. At this time, the secular people will prepare a yogurt feast to reward the monks. This is the origin of the Shoton Festival. As time goes by, the activities of the Shoton Festival gradually become richer. In addition to the traditional Buddha exhibition ceremony and Tibetan opera performances, there are also exciting activities such as yak racing and equestrian performances.
Shoton Festival is not only a religious festival but also a folk festival full of joy and celebration. During this festival, people will gather together to enjoy delicious food, watch Tibetan opera performances, and participate in various celebration activities to celebrate this special moment.
