FLOWER
Every year during the first days of August, Medellín is filled with flowers and parties for one of the most traditional celebrations in Colombia: the Flower Festival. The Flower Festival is the city's most important event, for it embodies all the values of the people of Antioquia.

How is the flower festival celebrated in Colombia?
The annual festival is a significant driver of tourism and holds importance to the cultural fabric of the city. In addition to various flower display-oriented events and contests, the festival includes musical performances, an antique car parade, and an 11km bike ride.

Colombia is world-famous for its blooms and every year, in the heart of the coffee district, a giant festival is held in Medellin to celebrate Colombian flowers and those who grow them.

In August, when Medellín – known as the “city of eternal spring” – blooms in all its splendor and balconies, terraces and gardens are flooded with flowers, the much-celebrated Medellin Flower Festival begins.

This feast of color and joy, which is called Feria de las Flores in Spanish, takes place at the start of the month and is a kaleidoscope of pride and celebration that lasts for ten days with a packed calendar of activities.

Comuna 13‼️
Medellín, Colombia
Outdoor escalators and art have helped change what was once a notoriously dangerous part of Medellín.

COMUNA 13 USED TO BE one of the most dangerous areas in Medellin but community projects and a series of outdoor escalators have helped turn this poor district into one of the most colorful communes in the city.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, Comuna 13 was considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the world. It was run by violent drug trafficking organizations, who used the poor, sprawling hillside barrio as a transit route in and out of the city, and served as a stronghold for guerrillas, gangs, and paramilitaries.

But things began to change in 2002 when President Alvaro Uribe launched Operation Orion, a raid on Comuna 13 spearheaded by 3,000 troops backed by helicopters. It was a brutal and controversial beginning. During the first week of the raid, at least 18 people were killed, 34 wounded and almost 250 arrested in Comuna 13. The neighborhood’s 100,000 residents were caught in the crossfire, resulting in arbitrary detentions, disappearances, and hundreds of injuries.

During the following decade, the government set about improving the hillside commune, redeveloping the brick houses and building community centers but access remained a problem. So, in 2011, the government installed the escaleras electricas, a series of outdoor escalators that extend for 1,260 feet (384 m), connecting parts of the once chaotic and isolated hillside neighborhood to the city below.

The escalators gave residents newfound freedom and brought about a total shift in the local mentality. Kids began to play on the streets once again, and local artists felt safe enough to go out and brighten up their neighborhood.

30 Exotic Tropical Fruits of Colombia a Fruit Lovers Paradise

Colombia is a fruit lover’s paradise with many delicious and exotic tropical fruits that can be difficult to find in North America or Europe.

In Colombia, you can find the typical fruits that are easy to find in North America and Europe like apples, bananas, pineapples and strawberries. But one of the benefits of living in Colombia is the tropical fruits, which are delicious, inexpensive and plentiful.

Colombia is the second most bio-diverse country in the world after Brazil. The country benefits from its geographic diversity with two coasts, mountain chains, open savannas and tropical rainforests. So, the country is reportedly home to nearly 10 percent of the world’s species. The country has over 56,000 plant species registered. There are more birds and more orchids found in Colombia than are found in any other country.

Reasons Why You Should Visit Medellin at Least Once in Your Lifetime✨

Medellín was once famed for being one of the most dangerous cities on earth, but a lot has changed since the dark days of the 1990s, and it has become a hugely popular tourist destination in recent years. But why visit Medellín? Here are great reasons why you should experience ‘The City of Eternal Spring’ at least once in your lifetime.

It’s the ‘City of Eternal Spring’

The weather in Medellín is just about perfect, hence its rather lyrical nickname of ‘The City of Eternal Spring.’ With average year-round temperatures of around 22°C (72°F) and daily highs of over 30°C (86°F), the climate is about as good as it gets.

You’re surrounded by natural beauty

Medellín is located in a bowl in the Andes mountains, meaning that wherever you go in the city you are basically guaranteed a view of mountains and stunning landscapes.

Innovation…

Medellín was named ‘Innovative City of the Year’ by the Wall Street Journal in 2013, and that amazing innovation is visible throughout the city today.

The people are incredibly welcoming

Paisas – as the folks from Medellín and Antioquia are affectionately known – are famously friendly people. It’s not unusual to feel welcome anywhere you go Colombia, but in Medellín you get the sense that people genuinely are very happy to see you there.

GO TO KNOW 📚🧳🕵🏾

Before talking about Comuna 13, it is important you understand the word “comuna” in the local context.

Medellin is divided into 16 communes (from now on we’ll call them Comunas).
If you think that El Poblado or Laureles are not comunas, you really need to read this blog to the end.
All of the 250 neighborhoods in Medellin are part of one of the 16 comunas we have in the city.
So comunas are not only the slums or the vulnerable neighborhoods as the locals also believe.
Poblado is the comuna 14 (far away in distance to the comuna 13). Downtown (where Botero Square is located) is the comuna 10.
Having said that, you are now aware that comuna 13 is one of the 16 comunas.
If you are staying anywhere in Medellin you could ask someone which comuna you are in.

Wakeboarding is also a popular watersport and just like water ski, this activity requires good upper body strength, endurance, and good balance. The rider will be standing on a wakeboard – a short board with foot bindings and towed by a rope behind a boat. If you are a newbie, we highly recommend taking our wakeboard course with our professional instructors. At the end of the course, you’ll gain more confidence and you’ll find yourself skimming on the surface.
