The Police truck stopped at my house yesterday and one officer stood, slipping his machine gun behind him. The driver opened the back cage then presented me with a basket of Mandarin Ayote Squash. I gave them cookies. I ❤️ Costa Rica!

Toucan Tranquility Atenas is named for the stunning Keel Billed (Rainbow) Toucan and this handsome guy came yesterday to sit on the railing and look in at the human activity. The Toucan on the right is a Chestnut Billed Toucan. They all fly awkwardly then hop up a tree, calling with a frog like rasp. Fruit eaters yet opportunistic, they are usually shy though often seen in Atenas and Cahuita. Lovely birds and just one group of so many in the birdwatchers paradise of Costa Rica!

Just saw this gorgeous bird fly into the Jocote tree at the pool to have a leisurely breakfast, Its a Montezuma oropendula ...oro..gold/ yellow and its tail feathers in flight are brilliant yellow. What a treat!!

A hand carved art piece on the wall with best view from the pool.! Anniversary present from my honey and, with the Toucan at the base showcases some of the hundreds of species of birds that visit our area and in the forests beyond.

The Sept 15th independence from Spain for 199 years is celebrated this weekend throughout Costa Rica. Traditionally parades and floats, artisans, horses, music, fireworks, dances, and true Tico hospitality prevails. Although this year it is quieter, we can hear singing from our Tico guests at Toucan Tranquility. A small family celebrates together..

When we have guests at Toucan Tranquility we always leave them a surprise in the fridge. Tomorrows guests will receive A Pineapple and Watermelon bowl with homemade chocolate chip cookies. Yup you know there are always cookies somewhere!! Pura Vida y'all!

Just saw a pair of these sitting on a bare tree just over from the pool. Will try to enhance my shaky pictures but so excited. They looked more brilliant in color than this one! They are stunning!
