The Police truck stopped at my house yesterday and one officer stood, slipping his machine gun behind him. The driver opened the back cage then presented me with a basket of Mandarin Ayote Squash. I gave them cookies. I ❤️ Costa Rica!

These lovely sloths are often seen from the front porch of Calypso cottage in Cahuita, the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. Slow moving and adorable both the 2 and 3 toed sloths are a delight. This one was just across the street from the Cottage.

South of our condos in Jaco Beach and high up a ridgetop road live the Boruca tribe. They are warm, welcoming and eager to show this remarkable craft as well as superb cloth weaving skills. Howler monkeys: small, furry and very cute but oh, so loud! You don’t need an alarm clock in the jungle, as you can almost set your clocks to these noisy little fur-balls pretty much every morning at dawn! They are famous for their loud howls, which can travel 5 km through dense rain forest. Howler monkeys are among the largest of the New World monkeys and are found all over the country. They travel in family units, known as ‘troupes’, and you’ll almost certainly encounter some during your stay. Come see and hear for yourself! What’s on in Costa Rica this month? October and November are such beautiful months, lush and green and a perfect time to visit. However, December starts with the welcome site of the tail end of the green season. By Christmas the dry season is starting up and tourism is in full swing. Scarlet Macaws are regular visitors to the almond trees close to our two Jaco Beach properties. They can live to be over 60 years old and mate for life. In Costa Rica, an estimated 1,500 of these majestic birds live in the dry, moist, and wet tropical lowland forests along the Pacific Coast. You can see them all along the Central Pacific Coast from the Carara National Park to Manuel Antonio and often you can spot them flying directly overhead from our condos in Jaco Beach. Costa Rica's Oxcart Parades, celebrating the country's agricultural traditions, are held all over the country throughout the year and culminate in San Jose in March with a huge parade. The San Jose parade encompasses hundreds of colorful ox-drawn carts and their drivers, and many prizes are bestowed on the best and most beautiful carts. It begins in La Sabana Park and continue along Paseo Colon and Avenida Segunda. The end of the parade features folkloric dances and music.
