Agoutis are quite shy creatures but are really frequent visitors to the Casa Congo garden, with an almost 100% guarantee of seeing at least one during your stay. The Central American Agouti is a large rodent, kind of like a hamster on steroids, which feeds mainly on fruits and seeds. You can see them roaming the forest foraging during the day. Agoutis have a keen nose and sharp hearing and make a high-pitched noise when frightened.

What’s on in Cahuita this month? We found this great link from to keep up to date with what’s on and where you can also check if anything is happening during your stay. Costa Rica inaugurated October 31 as the National Day of the Masquerade (el Dia de la Mascarada Tradicional Costarricense) followed by All Soul's Day, Costa Rica’s version of Mexico’s famous Day of the Dead has people paying their respects to lost loved ones. October 12th is Columbus Day (which celebrates Columbus’ discovery of the New World) and is also the date of the Limon Carnival. Sadly, all 2021 Carnivals have been cancelled due to COVID-19. But we live in hope for 2022!
