Talamanca Hummingbird

Costa Rica Birding Tour October & November 2023

What is now the Talamanca hummingbird Eugenes spectabilis was originally described as a subspecies of the magnificent hummingbird (E. fulgens). Beginning in 2017 the North American Classification Committee of the American Ornithological Society (NACC), the International Ornithological Committee (IOC), and the Clements taxonomy split the magnificent hummingbird into the Talamanca hummingbird and Rivoli's hummingbird. The latter retained the binomial E. fulgens because of the principle of priority. However, as of 2020, BirdLife International's Handbook of the Birds of the World (HBW) retains the single species "magnificent" hummingbird treatment with two subspecies.

Lesser violetear

Costa Rica Birding Tour October & November 2023

The lesser violetear belongs to the order Apodiformes. Hummingbirds share this order with the swifts, such as the white-collared swift. The name Apodiformes is derived from the Greek words "a pous", meaning "without foot". While apodiforms do in fact have feet, they are quite small and their legs are short and relatively weak. Many birds in this order cannot walk, and thus rarely if ever land on the ground since quick escape from predators is virtually impossible. For this reason members of this order spend a majority of their time in the air.

Chestnut-colored woodpecker

Costa Rica Birding Tour October & November 2023.

The chestnut-colored woodpecker is 21.5 to 25 cm (8.5 to 9.8 in) long and weighs 80 to 105 g (2.8 to 3.7 oz). Both sexes' heads are dull ochraceous or tawny with a pointed crest. Males are bright red from the lores to behind the eye and down to the throat; the chin and upper throat sometimes also have some red. Females have no red. Both sexes of adults have rufous-chestnut upperparts with a cinnamon-buff rump and black bars on the back and uppertail coverts. Their flight feathers are rufous-chestnut with some dusky brown tips. Their tail feathers are dull black with chestnut bases. Their underparts are chestnut heavily marked with black "V" or "U" shapes. Individuals have some variation in the intensity of the black markings, especially the bars on their upperparts. The adult's bill is ivory-yellow with a blue-green tinge at its base, their iris chestnut or garnet brown, and their legs dark olive to grayish. Juveniles are similar to adults but duller and darker overall, with dusky mottling on the malar area, and fewer and more irregular black marks on their underparts.

Crimson-collared Tanager

Beautiful tanager of humid tropical lowlands. Favors evergreen forest edge and verdant second growth. Forages unobtrusively at all levels in trees and bushes, usually in pairs. Sexes alike: velvety black overall with a bright bluish-white bill and a glossy crimson collar and rump.

Russet-naped Wood-Rail

Large, brightly colored, chicken-like rail of freshwater marshes and damp woodland, less often occurs in mangroves. Unlike many rails, can be conspicuous, even bold, walking in the open along the edge of ponds and rivers, twitching its short black tail; usually seen singly or in pairs. Note long yellowish bill, hot-pink legs, and gray head and neck contrasting with orangey breast. Similar to Gray-cowled Wood-Rail, but barely any range overlap, and Russet-naped has a bright reddish-brown patch on the back of the head.

Kentucky Warbler

Shy warbler of deciduous forest with thick understory. Often found in swampy areas or near slow-moving streams. Bright yellow below with olive back. Telltale black mask set off by yellow spectacles and throat. All plumages show face pattern; adult males boldest with black crown, females and immatures duller with grayish or olive crown. In the breeding season, more often heard than seen. Song is a series of 4-8 loud, rich, rolling notes "preet, preet, preet, preet." Can perch high when singing, otherwise stays near the ground.

🆔White-tipped is well-named with only white tips on the tail feathers, while Buff-tailed has more extensive buff on the outer tail feathers. Sicklebills are most often seen feeding on Heliconia flowers in the dark forest understory; they’re generally uncommon and fast-moving, difficult to get a look at. Does not visit feeders.

A very rainy morning but with this great visit of this hummingbird flew into my house.

Small, inconspicuous hummingbird of humid tropic
al lowlands. It prefers the shady understory of forests and forest edges, where it feeds at all levels. Males tirelessly sing from knee-high perches in the understory, and can be difficult to locate. Note small size, lined face, arched bill, buff underparts, and tan rump patch. Its chirp call in flight is similar to that of the Long-billed Hermit but slightly softer and less explosive.

Their raucous call fills the air throughout the rainy season and during the dry season rains. They are good sized tree frogs and adults measure between 40 to 78 millimeters.
Their common name comes from the black patch that starts at the tip of the snout and continues through the eye and the eardrum, along the frog's face. This black mask will enhance the frog's camouflage by hiding the shape of the eye, which is what many predators will use to detect their prey. They can change their color and you may find frogs with coloration ranging from light tan to olive green..

Masked Tree Frog.
