The Ecolodge is surrounded by Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge which conserves 330 hectares (815 acres) of tropical rainforest, mangrove, wetlands, river bank, and beach front. The swimming pool is disinfected with ozone rather than chlorine, so the water won't burn your eyes and won't contaminate the environment. Within the gardens surrounding the lodge you will find a butterfly garden, an orchid garden and a bird watching tower. Habitat and Behavior of the Spectacled Caiman (Caiman crocodilus)

Caimans are semi-aquatic reptiles, spending much of their time in the water but also venturing onto land to bask in the sun. At Hacienda Barú, they inhabit the calm waters of the reserve's wetland areas, where dense vegetation and shallow waters provide ideal conditions for hunting and shelter.

These caimans are opportunistic feeders with a diet that includes fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and small mammals. Their role as predators is essential in maintaining a balanced ecosystem by controlling populations of prey species.

This diversity makes it an ideal habitat for many species of wildlife, including the spectacled owl. The reserve offers guided birdwatching tours, and the spectacled owl is often a highlight for visitors. These owls prefer dense, mature forests but can also thrive in secondary growth and forest edges.
