Did you know why the word GUANACASTE is part of our name and why we feel so proud of it?

Guanacaste is a word of Nahuatl origin that means “tree with ears” (quauh: tree, nacaztli: ear). This is the national tree of Costa Rica, but also the name of our beautiful province.

The Annexation of Guanacaste Day, celebrated on July 25th, commemorates the annexation of the province of Guanacaste to Costa Rica, which occurred in 1824, so today we are celebrating 199 years of being part of this blessed country.

The colors on our flag are green, red, white and blue.The red triangle stand for the heart of the Guanacastecans, their fondness and happiness, their courage and manliness shown in many occasions; blue is for the province's transparent sky; white is a sapphire mantle in the province's fertility and peace. Green is the provincial emblem for the Guanacaste tree, the pasture, the crops, the work of the peasant and the cattleman.
