In Costa Rica, October 31st is celebrated as Masquerade Day, a date dedicated to honoring and enjoying this special cultural tradition.
It is celebrated all over the country. However, three cities stand out with the largest celebration: Cartago, Escazu, and Barva de Heredia. This is due to the actual craft-making skills of these locals: it is in these three towns that the best mask makers reside.
Unlike the name suggests, Costa Rican masks are not ordinary masks: they are usually oversized paper mache heads that depict prominent and popular characters from politics, mythology (in this case, devils and animals are popular), and characters from sports and films aren’t excluded.
As the masked participants of the parades meander down the main streets, they dance to the rhythm of local folkloric music. The tunes are played by so-called Cimarronas, whose skills are particularly revered.
Participating in Masquerade Day celebrations is a captivating cultural experience for both locals and visitors. It offers a glimpse into Costa Rica’s traditions, music, and customs, allowing individuals to immerse themselves in the country’s rich heritage.

Arbor Day is celebrated in Costa Rica every June 15th, thanks to an Executive decree established in the year 1915. The date today maintains the purpose of protecting the environment, mainly the wooded areas of the country.
It is a commemoration to reflect on the benefits received by forests for all living beings. Let’s remember that trees transform carbon dioxide, minimize flood risks and prevent soil erosion.
Without a doubt, the easiest way to support trees is to go out and plant trees yourself. Whether you plant a single new tree in your backyard or plant trees with a group, your actions will have a significant positive impact on the planet and climate change.
Engage with your community and local representatives to raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation in mitigating climate change. Your voice matters and can inspire others to take action.

World Ocean Day is not just a day of awareness but a call to action. It’s an opportunity for individuals and communities worldwide to unite in efforts to protect and preserve our oceans for future generations.
In recognition of this important day, we have engaged in a team volunteering project at Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Romelia with their sea turtle conservation program and Operation Rich Coast.
To prepare for the arriving turtles, CAST staff members joined forces to clean-up the beach where turtles nest.
Beach clean-up gains importance as turtles need a clean environment to lay eggs. Often, plastics, glass, foam, rubber and discarded fishing gear that get washed up on the beaches pose a threat to the turtles as they get trapped in them or even consume many items. During the sea turtle nesting season, it is crucial to ensure the beaches are kept free of marine debris.
We want to inspire people to get active in conservation efforts. By volunteering and supporting projects like this, you are helping to increase the amount of sea turtles hatchings in order to give higher survival rates.
