With an archipelago that boasts impeccable beaches, turquoise waters, and a distinct Afro-Caribbean culture, it’s easy to see why this region has become a must-see for visitors to Panama. Located along the Caribbean coast in the northwestern part of the country, Bocas del Toro is known for its beautiful islands and laidback vibe.
The largest and most developed island in the Bocas archipelago is Isla Colón. It is from here that most visitors will begin their exploration of Bocas. On the southern tip of the island lies Bocas town. The streets of this funky and touristy town overflow with local artisans and tour pushers, trendy bars and international restaurants. Embedded with a medley of cultures – everything from Afro-Caribbean to European is represented – Bocas town is the jumping-off point for trips throughout the archipelago and has the region’s most extensive visitor services. Hotels, hostels, and luxury bungalows are abundant and the nightlife is some of Panama’s best. Isla Colón’s outdoor areas are attractive and offer visitors a number of white-sand beaches and good surfing spots to choose from.
A ten-minute boat ride away, Isla Bastimentos is the second largest island in the archipelago. Its north shore beaches are some of the best in the region—both Wizard and Red Frog Beach are tranquil and gorgeous spots to spend the day. Their shores are clean, secluded, and backed by dense forests. And although the sea is often too rough for swimming, a bit farther out provides visitors with some wonderful snorkeling opportunities. The area known locally as Cayo Crawl has reefs that attract tropical fish, as does the water surrounding the Cayos Zapatillas.
Whether it’s an all-day snorkeling trip, a week-long surfing expedition, or a short visit to one of the region’s indigenous communities, Bocas del Toro will captivate and thrill all who visit.
Get excited and browse our selection of our favorite hand made tours including Bocas del Toro. From romantic honeymoons to family-fun; these are completely flexible and arranged to your needs.

July 25: The Annexation Of Guanacaste
“What’s that noise?” Well, folks, today is July 25 and in Costa Rica, that means today is “Guanacaste Day” or more formally, a celebration of la Anexión del Partido de Nicoya. We’re talking parades and bombetas (like sound-only fireworks – all the boom, none of the color), history and celebration, bombas (traditional rhymes) and food. So, yes, that’s that noise. Once upon a time, Costa Rica was not Costa Rica, Guanacaste was not Guanacaste, Nicaragua was not Nicaragua, and Central America was not Central America. All of the above were Spanish colonies, some were Spanish provinces. Two of those provinces were the Province of Costa Rica and the Province of Nicaragua. Incidentally, Guanacaste belonged to neither: Guanacaste didn’t actually exist at all. Instead, it was the Partido de Nicoya. With the formation of a Central American nation, the Partido de Nicoya was faced with a choice: Would they join the new nation as a member of the Province of Nicaragua or the Province of Costa Rica? While the region still retained ties to both provinces, there was one major difference between Nicaragua and Costa Rica: Political strife was brewing in Nicaragua, while Costa Rica had remained relatively peaceful. Additionally, the Partido de Nicoya had growing commercial ties with Costa Rica. If it sounds like an easy decision, it wasn’t: Culturally, ties to Nicaragua were very strong. So strong that Nicoya’s people were divided. So, when Costa Rica extended a geopolitical invitation to the Partido de Nicoya, Nicoya called for a vote. The region’s three major cities – Villa de Guanacaste (now Liberia), Nicoya, and Santa Cruz – discussed their decision for months. In the end, Nicoya and Santa Cruz both voted to join Costa Rica. The date was July 25, 1824. So, about those sounds you’re hearing: They’re celebration. They’re a remembrance of whence we come – of freedom, of choice, of peaceful politics. It’s a beautiful thing. So today, join in! Grab a glass of tamarindo juice and a handmade corn tortilla, and dance to the music. Enjoy Guanacaste, on the best day of the year to be in Guanacaste.

El Tigre Waterfalls Monteverde: Epic Waterfall and Hanging Bridges Hike
Monteverde is famous for its tropical cloud forest reserves which offer fantastic hiking opportunities. Although a hike in one of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserves is a must, another great hike you can do is the El Tigre Waterfalls.
The El Tigre Waterfalls Monteverde hike takes you deep into the cloud and transition forests to see a myriad of waterfalls via a network of hanging bridges. The hanging bridges go over rivers, into the forest and through canyons, creating a sensation of trekking deep into the wild Costa Rican jungle. If you love hiking and are looking for a fun adventure in Monteverde beyond ziplining, then you must El Tigre Waterfalls!
You will hike the first 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and you can choose between a horseback ride or 4×4 safari car for the last 3 kilometers (1.8 miles).
They also offer a zipline bike which is available at the end of the hike at the 5 kilometer mark. It is exactly what it sounds like, you will bike over the river, through the forest on a bike situated on a cable. There are three cables from 100 to 150 meters in length (328 – 492 feet) about 70 meters (230 feet) above the ground.

Are you looking for an adrenaline rush during your vacation to Costa Rica? If so, you should book a rappelling or canyoning adventure tour to get a “bird’s eye view” of the rainforest, waterfalls, and other stunning scenery in Costa Rica. If you decide that a rappelling or canyoning experience sounds like a worthwhile way to spend a day in Costa Rica, keep reading for some information about these adventure sports, the best places for canyoning in Costa Rica, and some frequently asked questions about canyoning and rappelling.
Rappelling is a controlled descent on a steep slope, such as a rock face, by moving down a rope connected to anchors. The person descending controls their own movement down the rope to land either by free fall or by slowly lowering or “bouncing” with their feet down the wall.
Canyoning (or canyoneering) is a variation of rappelling. This adventure sport consists of rappelling down canyon walls, and in Costa Rica, it often includes an opportunity to rappel down waterfalls. Canyoning can also include rock climbing, obstacle courses, suspension bridges, and even the chance to swing on a Tarzan swing, which is why it’s a popular activity in Costa Rica.
There are tons of excellent canyoning and rappelling locations across Costa Rica — from the high-elevation rainforests in the Monteverde Cloud Forest and Arenal Volcano to the raging rivers and waterfalls in Guanacaste and along the Pacific Coast.

There’s also the level of privacy you’ll enjoy at Nantipa, as the property is heavily forested. Stay in one of eight ‘Nanaku’ bungalows (which means ‘home’ in Chorotega), and enjoy 65 square meters (700 square feet) of space. Choose the layout you need and opt for one king bed or two queen beds in your sleeping quarters, with the added benefit of a pullout sofa bed in your living space. You’ll also have beautiful ocean, garden, or pool views from your terrace or balcony.
