In Costa Rica there are around 50 species of hummingbirds, at least two of which only exist here. Their ability to hover, with wings beating between 12 and 90 times a second, and to fly backwards makes them different from all other birds. Check out this beautiful Cherrie's tanager (Tangara Costarricense) bird! The preferred habitat is semi-open areas including light second growth, woodland edges, gardens and pasture with bushes. The cup nest is built up to 6 m (20 ft) high in a tree. These small but eye catching birds are highly active and can be spotted in much of the area. Costa Rica is a bird lovers paradise!

This tree frog (Smilisca baudinii) can be found in many areas of Costa Rica and Central America. Feeding on a variety of insects these special frogs help to keep the insect populations in check. This is an emerald basilisk lizard, more commonly known as a “Jesus Christ lizard” for their amazing ability to run across the surface of the water. This species can be found throughout Costa Rica, and can grow up to three feet long, with their tails making up most of that length. Spotting these in the wild is an impressive sight!
