Did you know that Costa Rica is home to one of the most adorable and unique species in the world?
Sloths are fascinating animals that live in the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica. Their slow and peaceful lifestyle is key to their survival, but behind their sluggishness are some amazing facts!

🌳 Why are they so slow? Sloths move at an average speed of 0.03 km/h, making them one of the slowest mammals on the planet. Their metabolism is very low, meaning they don't need to eat large amounts of food, and this allows them to take their time moving from tree to tree.

🍃 What do they eat? They mainly eat leaves, which are low in calories and nutrients, so they need to rest and sleep between 15 to 20 hours a day to conserve energy. This also makes their digestion super slow—around one week to digest a single leaf!

A life in the treetops Sloths spend most of their time in trees, using their long, strong claws to cling to branches. Though they can fall, their bodies are adapted to hanging upside down— they can even sleep like this without falling!

🌱 How do they help the environment? Sloths play a vital role in the Costa Rican ecosystem by helping to disperse seeds and pollinate plants as they move slowly through the forest. They are nature’s gardeners!

🦥 Types of sloths in Costa Rica Costa Rica is home to two main species:
Two-toed sloth: The most common, with a grayish coat and a calm face.
Three-toed sloth: Rarer, with a rounder appearance and a "smiling" face.

🚨 Why do we need to protect them? Despite their slow pace, sloths face threats due to deforestation and habitat loss. Protecting their forests is crucial for their survival. You can help! Support conservation efforts whenever possible.

Who are the Maleku?
The Maleku are one of Costa Rica's eight indigenous groups, living primarily in the northern region near the Arenal Volcano. With a population of around 600-700 people, they reside in three small villages: Palenque Margarita, Palenque Tonjibe, and Palenque El Sol. Their deep connection to nature is reflected in their spiritual beliefs and practices. The Maleku view the forest as sacred, believing every plant and animal holds a spirit.
They are dedicated to environmental conservation, often planting trees and preserving the rainforest they call home.
Traditions and Language:
The Maleku speak their native language, Maleku Jaíka, which they work hard to preserve.
They share their culture through storytelling, rituals, and ceremonies that honor nature and their ancestors.
