Tent-making

Heliconia latispatha, which is a plant species used for tent roosting (Costa Rica)

Bats in a tent
The Honduran white bat is one of approximately 22 known species of bats that roost within leaf "tents". The Honduran white bat cuts the side veins extending out from the midrib of the large leaves of the Heliconia plant causing them to fold down to form a tent. Tents are likely constructed by multiple individuals; females have been observed constructing tents, but it is likely that males do so as well. New tents are constructed throughout the year, as modifying the leaves into tents causes the leaves to die. Once modified into a tent, a leaf lives approximately 7.5 weeks, compared to 61 weeks in an unmodified leaf. Several species of Heliconia are used as roosts, including H. imbricata, H. latispatha, H. pogonantha, H. tortuosa, and H. sarapiquensis. Rarely, it has been documented using Calathea.

Have you seen this beautiful bird dive? I present to you American Dipper this species is within the Cinclidae Family there are only 5 Species in the world.
They commonly nest on rocky ledges on high banks of fast-flowing rivers, although some nest near shallow lakes. They have dense plumage with a downy coat underneath, an advanced ocular nictitating membrane, and a large uropygial gland to waterproof their plumage. Their blood can store more oxygen than other passerines, allowing them to stay underwater for up to 10 seconds. These adaptations allow them to dive and walk on the river bottom to feed on insect larvae.

Second picture is the sloth hair under a microscope

The microorganisms that live in these cracks within the hair were first investigated by biologists in 2014, and they discovered species of algae and fungi that have not been found anywhere else in the world.

These fungal species are currently being investigated by microbiologists, parasitologists, and oncologists alike, as some strains are showing uses in the treatment of malaria, Chagas disease, and even breast cancer.
have managed to find 84 fungi and bacteria in the fur of the sloth.

For the seventh consecutive year, more than 98% of the country's electricity production has been fueled by renewable resources, the product of five main sources: hydroelectric, thermal, geothermal, wind, biomass and solar.

According to preliminary data from the National Electricity Control Center (CENCE) released today, water continues to be the main source of energy supply, with a contribution of 73.39%, followed by geothermal energy with 13.84% and wind with 12.12%, while biomass and the sun accumulate 0.63%

¿Low season? What I see are new leaf shoots, I see a scale of beautiful greens, I see the second largest migration of raptors in the world, I see the green turtle season in Tortuguero, I see the caribbean ocean flat like a pool. It all depends if you are afraid of getting a little wet in the rain forest, but if not, you do not mind cooling off, it is one of the best seasons of the year, the ¡GREEN SEASON!

This baby turtle was a few weeks old. Next to him is his gastrointestinal tract, full of plastic. He was brought into as a wash back but wasn’t able to make it. Sea turtle rehabilitation staff member Emily did a necropsy and took this revealing image. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words and filled with 344 pieces of plastic!

Crown Shyness!

Even though scientists don't fully understand why some trees tend to "social distance", there is a thought among experts and it is that perhaps trees stay healthy by avoiding touching each other and not getting diseases from their neighbors.

How did you ever heared the red-capped manakin vocalize?
(Ceratopipra mentalis)
Red-capped Manakin can be found in both Caribbean and Pacific slopes of Costa Rica, been more common in lowland wet forests, when usually it is seen at low and middle levels. Leks of Red-capped Manakins may include up to five males, they perform from a display perch that they choose for the entire breeding season. This is typically a straight, slender, and horizontal branch that is free of foliage and in an open area that is unobstructed by surrounding vegetation. The most famous meeting display offered by this bird is the “moonwalk”, when the bird does kind of walk backwards.

Did you know that Genus Alouatta (Howler monkeys) have a trichromatic color vision, being the only new World monkeys with this specialty.
Some possible benefits:
The high-acuity trichromatic color vision of Alouatta facilitates the chromatic discrimination of certain hues (yellows, oranges, and reds) from a background of mature foliage. For howlers,
the functional ecology of trichromatic vision is debated, but it likely improves foraging efficiency.

We traveled to the northern lowlands of Costa Rica in search of great spots for birdwatching for our customers. Wildlife and a very cultural experience is what Boca Tapada has to offer, being away from the main touristic destinations had placed this region for very specific visitors, people that want to explore nature, learn about Costa Ricas culture and most importantly to connect with Nature
A five senses experience is what Boca Tapada is about. 😎

Bothriechis nigroviridis
Black-speckled palm-pit viper

One of the emblematic species of the cloud forest. Although it looks quite defenseless, this animal has a hemotoxin which it uses to digest the prey faster, not so much to immobilize the prey as the Neurotoxin that is found mainly in the Elapidae, like Coral snakes, sea snakes and Mambas which we dont have in Costa Rica
