The whales are here! Mid-July through the end of October is the best time to spot humpback whales as they migrate from Antártica to Costa Rica to breed and raise their calves. This video was taken July 27 near Isla del Caño.

It’s green season, but still so much fun to be had in Costa Rica. Green season simply means rain and less crowds. Most activities can be scheduled around the showers.
Took a trip to Isla del Caño with family for whale watching and snorkeling. Even though it was a cloudy day the water was so blue and clear. Amazing experience that we will never forget.
Will share a couple videos of the whales in a separate post

While eating a delicious dinner at La Trattoria Italiana at the Town Center, a scarlet macaw flew over…and then we saw where they have their nest.
The female usually lays eggs in a tree cavity like pictured here. The gestation period is around 5 weeks and the young offspring stay with the parents for a full year after hatching.
Oh, and GO CHIEFS!

I like to tell folks who visit Esterillos about the road that parallels the beach. Great for bike rides and there is plenty of shaded parking while you play in the sand and waves.

Candid shots of the beaches on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast in 1964…very remote! Reading through the comments on this site was simply amazing- as it was quite an adventure just to arrive and took a full day. Some families would take a train to Orotina and then load up onto cargo trucks for the last half of the trip. Others would drive the whole distance over the steep and curvy Monte de Aguacate route. The roads were still dirt, dusty and there was no bridge over the Tarcoles River. A small barge was used to shuttle vehicles to the other side. There was no electricity and people would use Coleman lamps and camp over their holiday or stay in rustic cabinas.
Quite a difference from the hustle and bustle of the Jaco of today.

Today’s find on our morning walk.

Sand dollars are truly unique creatures. A type of urchin, it can live around 10 years in shallow coastal waters. While living, they are purplish grey in color and covered in moving hair-like structures called cilia. When a sand dollar dies, it leaves behind its white exoskeleton which is very delicate and fragile.

A sand dollar in different cultures represents many things including: Tranformation and rebirth, luck, abundance or peace.

Whatever its significance, it is a natural wonder and we feel lucky to have found one on our walk in one piece.

Many times we get asked where to get groceries. Is it better to stop on the way in San José, Herradura or Jaco? Those are definitely options, but we would like to share that our local market, Super Sol in Esterillos Oeste, has a great selection of products - including fresh fruits and vegetables. Perhaps Jaco and Herradura have a better selection of meats, but once you are here you can find convenience and variety.
