One of this summer’s new additions is the ‘semi-alfresco’ welcome lounge area…

So while we’re still waiting for our bamboo shoe rack, coconut fibre door mat and a few other locally crafted treats to finish off this new chill space, the view and those welcome sea breezes are very much already in place… 🙏

So whether you’re after a cool space to lounge with a p**a and avoid the midday sun or perhaps a large covered space to do some yoga or enjoy a couple’s massage, we’re hoping this is yet another welcome addition. There’s even the idea that it becomes an additional bedroom for a last-minute extra guest…

The only thing we’re not 100% clear on is what to call the space - after all it’s becoming so much more than a lounge :)

It’s now almost a month since I left my pura vida tribe and I’ve been meaning to post this since the day I left…

With daily papayas & p**as from the garden, my body and mind has been spoilt. Morning visits from Tio (the increasingly greedy pizote), waking up super early with the howler monkeys and that last morning when 25 Toucans (still not sure how I counted but hey) flew so elegantly past the wrap-around deck - I’ve genuinely never seen more than two at any one time in 20+ years visiting and living in Costa Rica!

But the real purpose of this post is one of gratitude and love… to my wonderful team up at the lodge (Juanca & Ester) but also our extended Tribe and family in Tres Rios, Coronado, Ojochal, Uvita, Domi, Perez and all the way back up in Chepe! Thanks for the love, the laughs, your generosity and the PURA VIDA that is ubiquitously Costa Rica.

ES: Gracias por el amor, las risas, su genorisidad y la pura vida que es ubicuamente COSTA RICA!

A pretty productive Day 04 in the end as our new contrast hydrotherapy tubs by the alfresco lounge are starting to take shape. Had a cheeky dip the other day but the ‘full experience’ will have to wait a little while longer until the decks are completely down and the last couple layers of varnish applied…

After yesterday’s off-road adventure up to in Perez Zeledon, the crew and I are taking a well deserved rest-day before starting again at the crack of dawn mañana

While I obviously can’t wait to finish off our contrast hydrotherapy tubs and get a better handle on the seemingly never-ending list of maintenance jobs after a particularly heavy ‘green season’,, from the moment I woke with the howlers, definitely feeling the need to chill and disconnect today…

I recently learnt (again) the freedom one gains from being vigilant and observing our quality of thinking that we generate. It can be a really good tool for recognizing any negative projections and in turn not allowing them to take over…

Try replacing this low vibration thinking with the 5 best memories of your life. This in turn will allow you to feel a moment of stress but rather than fighting it, accept that “present moment” and invite this feeling and see where it “sits” within you, you can ask question where it comes from and what it has to tell you or simply send this feeling lots of love and accept it as part of your life which gives you experiences so you can grow, learn and raise your energetic potential and consciousness.

Look what we recently discovered on our doorstep!!! Introducing our closest (and current fave) Plant-based restaurant right here in Tres Rios. Amongst a host of super tasty plant-powered treats they create in their Alfresco restaurant are plantain chips - Tico style!

Similar to the Pura Vida Ecolodge Reserve, they have a host of tropical goodies growing around their retreat so rest assured these little goodies come straight from their own little plantain plantation. They grow and cultivate their own produce - zero km and all organic🙏🇨🇷🙏

But what’s a plantain you ask.. well it’s a tasty cooking banana.

Swipe to see some delicious options. Like, fried sweet plantain, smashed plantains into tostones for a savory side.
The plantain is a staple in Costa Rican cuisine and in almost all Latin and Caribbean countries.

We’ve always been BIG advocates of rewilding our oceans, recognizing the the abundant life it cradles and the intricate relationship with all of us here on planet earth…

Costa Rica’s Zona Sur is blessed with some of the wildest and most spectacular beaches in the world and Playa Tortuga is not only the nearest but is also one of our favourites. Whether you’re surfing, cracking open fresh coconuts or marvelling at baby turtles hatch and scurry into the craahing waves, you’ll be blown away by the space, the purity and the magic of this hidden little gem.

Pretty much at the beaches second entrance you’ll find who are doing some amazing conservation work in the area and back up on the Costanera Highway, you’d be mad not to sign up for one of ‘s ‘experiences with a purpose’. We highly recommend a day trip to Isla del Caño 🙏🇨🇷🙏

Come rain or shine, mornings are an especially sacred time up , a time for appreciation, gratitude, reflection and awareness. A long time ago now, we decided to leave the oceanview & jungleview suites with very light blinds, allowing guests to wake naturally with the morning light as the sun creeps up above the mountains and the jungle comes alive…

The idea being, this magic hour is simply too good to miss and a ‘pura experience’ in itself!

Slip on your bamboo kimono gown (the early mornings mornings at 350 metres altitude can be surprisingly fresh during green season), and take your pick from 5 very special organic coffee blends we have selected for this season’s guests…

**GOOD NEWS**

Starting just a couple of days ago (June 12th to be exact), the United States has lifted the Covid test requirement for international travellers entering the US. That means if you are visiting Costa Rica, you will no longer have to be tested to return home (or if you have a layover in the US).

And since Costa Rica doesn't require a test to enter, you won't need any Covid tests to vacation in the land of Pura Vida. Logistically and financially, this will definitely make it easier to travel. For full details and FAQs, please visit:

Today is World Ocean Day but the ocean deserves more than day! It gives us so much. It provides every second breathe we take and offers moments that take our breath away. It supports the livelihoods of millions around the world and the lives of countless creatures that call it home. And while it has been impacted by climate change, it holds the power to heal the Earth - but only if we join together to protect and restore it.

So whether its , , or day, it’s THE day to demand they take decisive action to revive and protect our most beloved marine ecosystems and work to save our climate. We must make world leaders face the reality of our planet’s vanishing wildlife and finally step up to committing to protect 30% of our land and seas by 2030.

Be more than a recreational tourist and sign up for one of ’s ‘experiences with a purpose’. Even if you only have a day or two in Costa Rica’s Zona Sur, join the team at MCEC on any of their experiences and discover the beautiful Osa Peninsula with a purpose. You will participate in marine conservation for a day, get involved in their research projects, and learn more about the underwater world and how to preserve it.

As we initiated our own membership over the last year, we decided to team up with shortly before they opened their beautiful new centre in Ojochal as we were keen to find a locally based outfit that was offering visitors to the area a little more than just zooming around the area chasing whales… MCEC Innoceana is ideally located between Marino Ballena National Park, the largest Wetlands of Costa Rica, the renowned Corcovado National Park, and the Biological Reserve Caño Island, and their principal aim is to protect our local marine ecosystem while making participation in conservation more accessible to all ocean lovers. They are part of who was also recently approved as a 1% for the Planet nonprofit. Their organization has been extensively vetted for effectiveness and is now thankfully eligible to receive our funding (through the 1% for the Planet scheme) as we pledge to give a little back to the local area so we can collectively focus on . This partnership is intended to advance Innoceana's global impact as well as involve more businesses like ourselves and individuals in the environmental movement. Conservation is key!

One of the greatest strengths we possess as humans is our ability to focus our minds on whatever we choose. So it stands to reason that if we're calm and still on the inside, we'll be able to handle anything the day chooses to throw our way. So up we're big advocates of the benefits of Zen training, believing the best way we can begin each day is by counting our blessings - a type of gratitude practice where by focussing on the positives we can say ADIOS to those bad hair days, or grumpy mornings where we've got out the bed on the wrong side... Turns out that gratitude could be the magic pill for happiness.⁠

Microplastics are sneaking up on us. They’ve slipped almost unnoticed into the air we breathe, our blood and even the placentas of our unborn babies. Our food too - an alarming study has shown that we could be eating as much as “a credit card’s worth of plastic every week”... surely that's worth two minutes of your attention... It’s not just humans who are at risk. The insidious chemicals found in plastic are building up in places as remote as the Arctic and Mount Everest - ingested by animals right the way up the food chain.

Despite mounting evidence and a global outcry against plastic, it's clear that our plastic problem is totally out of control.

While we’re still yet to see whale sharks in Costa Rica, the beauty of diving is that you genuinely never know what’s gunna show up! Although for (almost) guaranteed sitings, Costa Rica’s Wild Coco Islands are calling - pretty near the top of my bucket list - what about yours?

There’s another side to this though - When whale sharks feed like this they run the risk of ingesting all kinds of plastic.

Tragically, a whale shark will ingest on average 137 pieces of plastic an hour! This is not only desperately sad that us humans have left such a mark but also incredibly dangerous for these stunning creatures for a number of reasons including the fact that the plastic can block their ability to absorb nutrients…

, amongst many other things, we’re a retreat so together let’s do our best to do our part… 🙏🇨🇷🙏

P.s up at the lodge, we’re blessed to be able to take our water from a natural jungle spring which is then carbon purified - so no need to buy any plastic bottles 🙏🥥👍🏻

Did you know that currently 15% of the entire land on planet earth are protected areas whereas our beloved Costa Rica has designated almost 28% of its entire land area as protected land, almost half of which is organized into various national parks (so blessed to have Corcovado National Park on our doorstep)!⁠

This compares to just 3% of marine environments worldwide whereas Costa Rica has 166 protected areas covering 50% of the coastline; of these 20 are MPAs, classified as National Parks (90.6%), National Wildlife Refuges (6.6%), Wetlands (1.5%), Biological Reserves (1%), and one Absolute Natural Reserve (0.3%).⁠
