🌿 Meet the Baird’s Tapir – the largest land mammal in Costa Rica and all of Central America! 🐾 With their gentle nature and endangered status, spotting one is truly unforgettable. But this moment? Even more special – we were lucky enough to witness a mother tapir and her young exploring the jungle together on the trails around Sirena Ranger Station of Corcovado! 💚

These remarkable creatures, often found within Corcovado National Park, are known as the “gardeners of the forest.” As they feast on a variety of fruits and plants, they play a vital role in spreading seeds through their s**t, helping the jungle flourish and stay vibrant. 🌱 Seeing them on our tours is always a magical encounter with one of nature’s most fascinating animals!

"My husband and I had an amazing experience on our tour of Corcovado National Park with Selva Connections. Mitch and Paola were super helpful as we were researching the trip, answering all our questions quickly and thoroughly. Then, our guide, Henry, was absolutely incredible throughout the trip. He saw, heard and sensed countless animals, birds and insects and got them in his spotting scope quickly to maximize our views. He also used my phone to take many photos through his scope so that we came home with incredible photos that we would never have been able to get on our own. We were both looking forward to this trip, but we never expected to see sooooo much! Plus, Henry is extremely knowledgeable and explained so much to us that we learned a great deal about the park and everything that we saw. Staying out at the lodge was a special treat. The bunks were surprisingly comfortable and it was wonderful listening to the sounds of the jungle as we were falling asleep and waking up the next morning.

My husband went on a mango kayak tour with Gerald, through Selva Connections, one morning and that was also a great experience. Gerald was terrific explaining the biology of mangroves and pointing out the birds, fish and animals that we saw along the way.

🐸Have you ever seen tadpoles like these? Recently, we’ve been spotting plenty in Corcovado and other parts of the remote Osa Peninsula, thanks to the Glass Frog mating season. We captured this amazing shot of tadpoles, still with their tails, near the beginning their life cycle and unique metamorphosis.

🌿Female Glass Frogs lay their eggs on the underside of leaves hanging over streams or rivers, protecting them from predators. These transparent eggs develop right on the leaf, with tiny embryos visible through the membranes. After a few days or weeks, depending on the species and environment, the embryos transform into tadpoles. When ready, the tadpoles drop into the water below, where they continue to grow, develop legs, and eventually lose their tails as they transform into frogs.

This fascinating journey from egg to frog is one of nature's most remarkable transformations!

We quickly and quietly stepped aside to give them space. The young tapir dashed towards us to get to a nearby creek, and mama followed closely behind. While exploring Corcovado with Nathalie and her family, we stumbled upon this tiny but extremely dangerous fer-de-lance! 🐍 Look how well it’s camouflaged! To ensure everyone's safety, it's marked with leaves so all guides are aware. Fer-de-lance snakes are venemous and camoflauge perfectly with the forest floor.
