Finding things on the beach on the Osa Peninsula! What could this be...???

OSA Peninsula...in the 1930s, gold was discovered on the Osa. This is where myth and storytelling shade the truth. Some say it was the criminals who discovered the valuable metal when they were left to live or die on this natural penal colony. Others say it was a settler who found gold dust in a shell on the beach. Whatever the truth might be, the Osa was now gaining notoriety as the last frontier, which was lawless yet full of opportunity. Gold mining began in earnest in 1937 on the Rio Tigre (Golfo Dulce side). The gold miners reached the Madrigal River, limit to present-day CNP, in 1939. After discovering gold in the sand on the beach there, a "gold rush" began, complete with a movie theatre, general store, brothel and bar. This was short-lived.

The Osa Interactive Garden Night Walk Tour, Puerto Jiménez

This is a 2-hour guided night tour at Osa Interactive Gardens and Private Reserve. Enter the forest and cross a narrow bridge under the huge Ceiba tree. The river is a hot spot for wildlife and we often find caimans, turtles, basilisk, herons, and bats. Walk the path along the river to look for kinkajous, sleeping monkeys, insects, and frogs but watch your step while we look for our slithering scaly friends. We check the frog ponds, where we almost always find red-eyed tree frogs, and if we are lucky, gladiator and masked tree frog, tadpoles, and eggs. We explore the gardens to find sleeping butterflies hiding under leaves and many other colorful and strange insects. Then walk to another winding trail back down to the river, where, with some luck, we find more frogs, sleeping birds, owls, lizards, and a huge variety of insects.

Where Power and Preservation Collide - The Battle for the Osa Peninsula's Soul!

The early 1970s, before the formation of Corcovado National Park, marked a critical juncture in the history of the Osa Peninsula, where the complex relationship between the three distinct and sometimes hostile groups came to a head. Each faction sought to solidify its position and further its hold on the coveted Osa Peninsula, leading to a battle of wills that would shape the peninsula's destiny.

On one side stood the determined Osa Forest Products (OFP), seeking to exercise its commercial dominance over the land. However, a change in leadership brought forth an aggressive successor, Donald Allen, whose vision turned towards resort development. With ruthless tactics, he forced the closure of the Tropical Science Centre (TSC) field station, unleashing a wave of tension and uncertainty.

The squatters, with their dreams of settling on the Osa, attracted the attention and support of the newly formed Costa Rican Communist Party, determined to fight for their rights against powerful forces.

Meanwhile, the scientists, armed with their passion for research and conservation, forged an alliance with Christopher Vaughn, a Peace Corps volunteer working under Alvaro Ugalde and the newly formed Costa Rica National Parks. Their goal was to safeguard the pristine wilderness that had captivated them, amidst the swirling storm of competing interests.

As the battle for the Osa Peninsula unfolded, the air was thick with tension and confrontation. Strong-arm tactics were employed to intimidate settlers off the OFP lands, while the scientists and conservationists strove to preserve the natural wonder that had drawn them to these shores.

Amidst this turmoil, the fate of the Osa Peninsula hung in the balance, and the struggle would determine who held the legal rights and, more importantly, who possessed the strength to push their agenda to the top.

In the heart of this tumultuous era, alliances were forged, ideals were tested, and the future of the Osa Peninsula rested upon the outcomes of these clashes. The very essence of the Osa - its beauty, its biodiversity, its untamed spirit - was at stake, and the choices made in these pivotal moments would shape the course of its history for generations to come.

Our Little Village of Puerto Jimenez!

¡Nuestra Villita necesita ayuda!

Unos turistas caminando por la playa empezaron a ver lo triste y sucio que estaba ese lugar. Tomaron fotos y movian sus cabezas con asombro de lo mal que se veia. Lo que era un tan hermoso lugar se convertio en ruinas y basurero. Al observar eso Carlos Montero, ciudadano de Puerto Jimenez, se dijo a si mismo que eso ya no quiere volver a ver! Llamo Carlos a unos amigos y les comento su deseo de restaurar el bulevar. Se pusieron manos a la obra. A inicios de junio empezaron la gran obra, pero aun les queda trabajo por realizar. Necesitan recaudar $6.000 para continuar y finalizar las obras. Ya que Puerto Jimenez es un pueblo pequeno, se estan acabando las donaciones. Por eso esperan contar con su ayuda en esta gran obra comunitaria llena de corazon y orgullo. Gracias!

Some tourists walking along the beach began to see the sad, dirty state of the malecon. They took pictures and shook their heads, astonished by how bad it looked. What was once a most beautiful place had turned into filthy ruins. Upon observing this, Carlos Montero, a Puerto Jimenez citizen, told himself he never wanted to see that again. Carlos called some friends and told them about his wish to restore the malecon. They got together to make it happen. At the beginning of June, they began the huge project, but there is work yet to be done. They need to raise $6.000 to continue and finish the work. Since Puerto Jimenez is such a small community, the donations are now at a trickle. Because of that, they are counting on your help in this community project full of heart and pride. Thank you!
