An employee with Everglades National Park reported the dead sawfish and two dead bonnethead sharks to NOAA experts. Two of the sawfish are missing their rostra (saws). One other had its meat removed, leaving only the carcass.

The animals were found along the causeway between Everglades City and Chokoloskee Island, Fla. FWC's sawfish biologist will perform a necropsy on the animals to try to determine their cause of death.

Please call NOAA Enforcement Hotline at 1-800-853-1964 tips may be left anonymously.

Smalltooth sawfish reproduce every other year and give birth to just 7-14 young. The loss of these six animals is nearly equivalent to one mother’s entire litter.

Peck, Col. Samuel H. - Indian River, Jupiter Narrows, Peck’s Lake, Ankona; Photo, Peck's Lake The exact date that Peck’s Lake Inlet broke through in the 1960s was Thursday, March 12, 1962 during the famous “ASH WEDNESDAY STORM of 1962….” Thurlow-Lippisch.

Armed Occupation Act settler; head of family; permit #63 issued on April 17, 1843; notarized by E. B. Gould, Justice of the Peace for St. Johns County.

" The land is situated on the west side of the pass from St. Lucie Sound on what is called Jupiter Narrows, about three miles south of Gilbert’s bar or inlet, and embraces an old Indian field or plantation. Said land commences at the south east corner at a large mangrove tree marked with two cuts or blazes and running south of west one hundred and sixty rods, thence north or north west one hundred sixty rods, thence north of east to the said narrows so as to make the said tract of land consist of one hundred and sixty acres, thence in a south direction bordering on the narrows until past the land south of the landing at the old Indian fields, thence in a direct line south east to the said mangrove tree as above described. "

A banker and cotton broker from Augusta, Georgia, in 1843 he purchased the schooner William Washington and moved to the Indian River with four of his sons. Col. Peck planned to establish a large citrus plantation on his homestead property and was accompanied by a rather large contingent, including an assortment of craftsmen and several slaves. According to Peck’s son William Henry Peck, several of the settlers who arrived with the Peck entourage were in his employ in some capacity: Daniel Bowen, John Hutchinson, George Gordon, James Middleton, James Price, Charles Niemeyer, Crazy Ned and Cobbett the cobbler.
Instead of settling on the Jupiter Narrows tract, Peck assumed the homestead of Henry Peck (relation unknown), which bounded Mills Burnham’s homestead property on the north. The house built on this property was the largest in the colony and the only one built completely of milled lumber and “store-bought” materials. Construction of most of the colony’s houses was of pine saplings, palmetto fronds and beach debris, combined with a varying amount of store-bought materials. The house was reportedly built in sections in Savannah, brought down to the Indian River by sailing barge and assembled at Ankona. It is not clear as to whether this house was built by Samuel or Henry.
At this location Peck established a citrus grove, but since it takes about seven years for citrus to begin to produce, he operated a cargo and passenger service in the meantime, sailing his schooner William Washington between Savannah, St. Augustine and the Indian River.
In 1844 the settlers of the Indian River colony opened an inlet to the St. Lucie River near Peck’s Lake, and Col. Peck was the first to sail a vessel through the new inlet in his schooner Myrtis (see Davis, William).
It soon became apparent to the settlers that without a road connecting the colony with the outside world, the growth and progress of the area would remain stunted; so, on Dec. 16, 1844, Peck was among those who petitioned the Territorial House of Representatives requesting the construction of a road between New Smyrna and the St. Lucie River area. As it turned out, the road never came.
Following the grounding and subsequent loss of the William Washington in the Indian River Inlet in 1845, the Pecks gave up on their claim, sold their house - and/or the entire homestead - to Mills Burnham and moved back to Georgia. Peck’s Lake, which bears the name of the Colonel, is located between North Jupiter Narrows and South Jupiter Narrows in present Martin County.
Samuel - Son; born about 1829.
William Henry - Son; born about 1830. (See Peck, William)
Ossian - Son.
LeRoy - Son; born about 1835.
