In Costa Rica our three main mountain ranges (Tilarán, Central and Talamanca) constitute a geographic barrier that separates the Caribbean and Pacific populations of Fer-de-lance, and striking differences exist between individuals from opposite sides of the country.

Females from the Caribbean slope populations measure on average 167cm (66 inches), their smaller Pacific counterparts measure on average 142 cm (56 inches). There is also a distinct size difference between male and female individuals of all populations, on average females are 20% to 25% longer than males. Since the litter size of these live-bearing snakes is positively correlated with the female’s body size, ferdelances on the Caribbean slope give birth to more young than on the pacific side of the country. This species is extremely prolific, litter size ranges from 5 to 86 babies.

Juvenile Bothrops asper predominantly eat frogs and lizards while adults feed on birds and mammals, taking prey up to the size of opossums or rabbits.

It is coffee harvest season in our country.

Costa Rica offers some of the best coffee beans in the world, and my friend Tomas Gutierrez knows it well. He is one the finest producers of coffee in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. This region offers ideal conditions that allow coffee plants to grow beans with body and exquisite flavors.

The Central Valley of Costa Rica, also called the Grand Metropolitan Area, is located in the center of the country.

This region is ideal for coffee plantations and for all sorts of agricultural crops due to the rich volcanic soils found there, and although this is the most densely populated area of Costa Rica, you can still find pristine spots not far from its main cities.

Most travel agents and tour operators won’t take you there, many of them don’t even know this places exist, others have heard of them but they have never taken the time to explore them, being a true travel designer requires hours in the outdoors.

Many of our competitors just sell the easy path to our visitors, which ends up in mediocre experiences to the tourists that travel the world to visit our country.

1. Snowcap
2. Yellow eared Toucanet
3. Golden winged Warbler
4. Brown billed Scythebill
5. Collared Trogon
6. Tawny capped Euphonia
7. Wilson´s Warbler
8. Speckled Tanager
9. Tropical Parula
10 Rufous tailed Jacamar

Last weekend we ventured into one of the least explored areas of Costa Rica, the foothills of the Caribbean slope, an ecosystem located between the highlands of the Talamanca cordillera and the Caribbean coast. To get there we drove through small rural towns, places we had heard before in the tv news or newspapers, but new to my friends and I. We passed through the cities of Cartago and Paraíso, and the small towns of Tucurrique and Pejibaye, from there on, the paved road turned into gravel, until it reached La Marta Wildlife Refuge.

It was a pleasure to the see the verdant rainforest and to feel the rain again, for those of us that live in the pacific dry forest lowlands, the last months of the dry season turn heavy, the soil cracks, the constant heat, trees get rid of their leaves as in autumn, grass turns into a brownish-yellowish color, and forest fires can burn thousands of hectares in the province of Guanacaste.

Our birding hours were not amazing but fruitful, a passing storm through the Caribbean side of Costa Rica made the weather conditions kind of hard for wildlife observation. Here a photo of a White Collared Manakin (Manacus candei), a common resident of the lowlands and foothills of the Caribbean slope, it can be found from sea level to 700 meters and its geographical distribution goes from southeast Mexico to extreme west Panama.

Playa Negra Surf Trip. Last weekend we visited one of our favorite waves in the northern pacific coast of CR. It might sound cliché, but during our stay at Negra, my friend Alejandro and I woke up everyday at 445am in order to be able to paddle out with the first light. The moon was so full that at 515am we felt that the little light present was provided equally by the sun as by the giant full moon that was seated up in the sky, right above this magical right point break.

We woke up so early because we wanted to surf this break without too many people and with the best possible tide. Even though Playa Negra can break with any tide, it usually works better close to the high or mid tide, besides, it usually gets super crowded after 7am, and given the small take off zone this wave has, the competiveness for the waves is high among locals and tourists, so, if you really want to surf perfect waves at this break with nobody around, you better be an early bird.

Thanks for a great stay.

Guanacaste’s dry season sunsets. The view from this lodge is simply spectacular, one can see Guanacaste’s coastline from Las Catalinas all the way north to the Santa Elena peninsula. No other region in Costa Rica offers this red in the sky.
