ECUADOR PART III (and last):

At the lower elevations, Wildsumaco Lodge delivered big time. Military Macaws put on a show, and hummingbirds like Gould’s Jewelfront and Black-throated Brilliant dazzled us with their iridescent colors. Then seeing the Coppery-chested Jacamar added to the special birds list. A real highlight was visiting a community conservation center where we got front-row seats to an Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek. Watching those bright birds dance around was unforgettable.

On our last full day, we visited Antisana Reserve, where Andean Condors soared overhead, and we got excellent views of the Ecuadorian Hillstar. The landscape was wild and dramatic—a fitting end to the trip.

The hospitality at every lodge was top-notch, and our guides Alejandro Valenzuela and our mighty driver Edgar Asimbaya (seriously, this man could navigate anything) made the trip seamless and unforgettable.

Thank you Steve, Katy, Tony, Bernadette, John, Cissy and Cindy🫶🏻 for the unforgettable memories!

Here’s hoping to do more incredible trips like this sometime soon!

Part II: Next, we ascended into the high northern Andes at Papallacta Pass, standing at over 14,000 feet. The thin air was worth it for spectacular sightings of Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe and the striking Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant. Breathing was a bit of a challenge, but the birding made it worth it.

From there, we began our descent down the eastern slope, where the landscape morphed from stark alpine to verdant cloud forest. San Isidro Lodge was a key stop—and so was its most famous resident, the enigmatic San Isidro Owl, which has puzzled ornithologists for years due to its uncertain taxonomy. Seeing it felt like meeting a legend in the birding world.

One of the trip’s unexpected gems was a casual visit to a family farm. We hit the jackpot with sightings of Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Powerful Woodpecker, and both Crested and Golden-headed Quetzals. Definitely a highlight in our trip!

Stay tuned for the third episode of our Ecuadorian birding adventure!

Our recent 12-day birding adventure through Ecuador was nothing short of epic. This group of friends is deeply passionate about conservation and keen on learning about the cultural, historical, and environmental heartbeat of the places we visit—set out with high expectations. Ecuador didn’t disappoint.

We have so many cool sightings to share that we are going to do it by chapters!!

We kicked things off in Quito at Puembo Birding Garden then move on to the Mindo area, exploring the lush Chocó-Andean region. The birding here was off the charts. Highlights included Rose-faced Parrot, Black Solitaire, and two absolute stunners: the Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan and the Toucan Barbet. It was non-stop action in a beautiful setting.

Here our first set: (names on every photo)

Today is the last day of a truly amazing tour in Panama with our friends from Lahontan Audubon Society.

We can't say enough about what a great experience it was for all of us. We got to see a Harpy Eagle mother taking care of her young eaglet. The long walk through the mighty forests of Darien National Park was worth every minute!

We stayed at the Canopy Tower for the first part of the tour and birded several iconic sites such as Pipeline Road. Then we continued for 6 more days exploring the eastern part of the country at the unique Canopy Camp.

Many thanks to all the staff at both lodges for their hospitality and to our Panamanian guide Eliecer Rodriguez who took excellent care of all of us.

And of course thanks to the wonderful group of birders who made this trip happen!

Very recently, there's been a significant taxonomic update in the world's Clements/eBird lists; here's a summary of those changes that affect Costa Rica.

(You don't really need to do much to your own lists as they will automatically be updated, the main purpose of these compilations is to give a reference to what's changed then we can submit eBird lists more accurately!)

Happy birding everyone! 🦜🐦‍⬛🦩🦉🦆✌🏻
