The reason to travel is not just about great food, drinks, museums, and the typical stuff we all talk about, but to leave a positive footprint where you've been.
And that's what fell in our lap.
After a homestay with a Zapotec family in the weaving village of Teotilan de Valle (on the outskirts of Oaxaca), what started as a language immersion experience led to a wonderful friendship and leaving a positive footprint in Mexico.
The family's youngest daughter is smart and eager to learn; she has a smile that lights up a room. The local school does not teach English so her educational future had limits. Gary and I decided to sponsor the next 4 years of her high school education at a private school in Oaxaca. English, computer skills, chemistry, and more will provide a well-rounded education for building a better life for herself and her family. She goes to the end of the road to catch a 5:30 am bus into the city, returning home sometimes as late as 6 pm. She started practicing this get-up-early schedule a month before school started to ensure she was ready. How many kids do you know doing this?
This is the stuff that makes travel meaningful.
You can meet this lovely family at the Oaxaca Food and Wine Festival. They are one of several exclusive artisan tours we are offering to neighboring indigenous villages. Their beautiful wool textiles..wall tapestries, rugs, purses, etc.. are on display at their home/workshop and on IG @ laxha_textil (Laxha means loom in Zapotec)
