The Fascinating Process of Egg Hatching at Wildlife Refuge is happening now 🐢 🌊

After the eggs are laid, they must be carefully concealed in the sand for approximately 50 days until they hatch.
The newborns typically emerge at night, creating a mesmerizing and enchanting spectacle.
The gender of the babies is determined by the incubation temperature.
Once they break free from their shells, their sole aim is to reach the ocean.
This journey is perilous as various birds and animals lie in wait for them!
Nearly sightless at birth, the babies rely on the scent of the sea to guide them in the right direction.

Local residents frequent the beach during this period, working diligently to ward off dogs, iguanas, and birds attempting to prey on the hatchlings.

Witches Rock (Roca Bruja): A Premier Surfing Destination in Costa Rica 🏄‍♂️ 🌊 🏄‍♀️ 🇨🇷

Are you passionate about surfing and seeking an exceptional surfing experience in the Gulf of Papagayo region, regardless of your skill level?

Look no further! 🏄‍♂️ 🌊 🏄‍♀️
We offer top-notch boats, accompanied by experienced and professional captains and instructors, ensuring an unparalleled surfing adventure.

Our esteemed client, David, traveled from the United States and spent five delightful days at the Four Seasons resort. During his stay, he joined us for four exhilarating days of surfing, creating unforgettable memories.

We ventured to the renowned Witches Rock, widely regarded as one of the world's premier surfing destinations, where David experienced four days of pure adrenaline and surfing bliss.

Have you had the pleasure of hearing about the legendary Witches Rock 🪨🌊?

Witches Rock is a superb Costa Rica surf spot and a haven for the dedicated and experienced surfer.

The surf breaks and swells are very powerful which can make the surf, even off season, pretty spectacular.
That’s why it’s important to know that surfing on such a remote beach requires preparation. Naranjo Beach is in the middle of nowhere surrounded by hot, tropical dry forest, mangroves and wildlife. So, put on your hiking shoes, bring your board, snacks, and lots of water because it is definitely worth the trip.

Witches Rock (Roca Bruja) is a giant slab of a boulder standing out from the ocean bottom and peeking through the water like a giant.

Without a doubt, our experience with Mr. David was truly memorable. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to collaborate with him again in the future and further explore the wonders of our country.

August 31st: Happy Afro-Costa Rican Day! 🇨🇷

We are delighted to be a part of this momentous occasion, as we once again commemorate the annual celebration of Black people and Afro-Caribbean culture.

About it:

The history of Costa Rica cannot be told without recognizing the important sociocultural contribution of the Afro-Caribbean community. In 1980, the Union of Educators in Costa Rica realized that a truly multicultural and ethnically diverse society needs to take time to celebrate its roots, and thus El Día del Negro (Afro-Costa Rican Day) was born.

African heritage in Costa Rica dates back to the colonial period, when Spanish conquistadors brought a few slaves to the country in light of the difficulties they faced in enslaving the indigenous. The first significant arrival of Afro-Caribbeans, however, would take place in 1872 after a ship with nearly a thousand Jamaicans aboard arrived from Kingston. These Jamaican workers built the early railroad network in Costa Rica, and by 1927 there were about 20,000 living in Limon (about 55 percent of the population of the port city).

The early Afro-Costa Rican workers moved from the railroad to the banana plantations and from the docks to the municipality. Many of our agricultural advances in the early 20th century were achieved thanks to the know-how of farmers who came from the Caribbean islands. Afro-Costa Ricans learned from the indigenous and viceversa.

Afro-Costa Rican Cultural Heritage

Some of Costa Rica’s dearest cultural symbols are based on the Afro-Caribbean experience. Case in point:

• Gallo pinto comes from the timeless Caribbean “rice and beans” recipe.

• The marimba (bamboo and wooden xylophone) is an Afro-Caribbean musical instrument.

• Bananas and sugar cane, two major crops native to Asia, were brought here by the Jamaicans because their ancestors had mastered cultivation in the African continent.

• The palm oil extraction process is of African origin.

We cannot forget about Mekatelyu, a dialect derived from Jamaican Creole English, or about calypso music, which was brought to Limon by people from Trinidad and Tobago

What would Costa Rica be without without the richness of the Caribbean culture?

Let's commemorate this momentous occasion. 💃🏽💃🏽🇨🇷😎

Arrival has started this month - time to visit the Ostional Wildlife Reserve 🐢 Between last night and this morning about 200 turtles have arrived to lay their eggs.

It is a wonderful event that can be appreciated 1 and even 2 times a month. 🐢 🐢 🐢

Would you be interested in experiencing this magnificent natural phenomenon once more?

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you are interested.
We will ensure that you have a memorable and enjoyable tour.

The beach of Ostional is the scenery for a rarely-seen biological wonder. In rainy season, the week before new moon, hundreds – and sometimes hundreds of thousand sea turtles come to one specific mile of beach at Ostional to dig their eggs into the black, volcanic sand.

The Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica was created in 1984 to protect one of the world’s most important nesting sites of the olive ridley sea turtle.

Only olive-ridleys and their close relatives, Kemp’s Sea Turtles, the latter an Atlantic species synchronize their nesting in mass emergences or "arribadas"

Visiting Ostional:

The Ostional Wildlife Reserve extends 15 km along the shoreline, including the beaches of Ostional, Nosara and Guiones. It is only a narrow, 200 m wide strand of beach, but extends inland along the estuaries of the rivers and mangrove swamps where it also protects large colonies of birds. Offshore the reserve incorporates another 3 miles stretch of maritime zone.

During nesting season (Aug – Nov) solitary turtles arrive almost every night at Ostional and sometimes the rare and endangered giant leatherback turtles and green sea turtles come to nest as well.

On a daytime walk on the beach you see lots of white shreds from broken turtle eggs. Crowds of black vultures sit in wait for hatching turtles or they pick and scratch impatiently with their beaks and feet in the sand to uncover the tasty eggs.

At night, when there is an arribada, you must check in with the ranger booth at the southern end of Ostional.

Arribadas usually occur during the darkest nights: a few days before the new moon.

The majority of turtles arrives between 8 pm and 4 am.

Time for sea turtles at Ostional National Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica

They arrive literally in waves, slowly hauling their heavy bodies out of the ocean and up the beach. They wait for the high tide at night, using the high surf to propel them farther up the sand, and the protection of darkness against predators to dig their nests and lay their eggs. Thousands upon thousands, they keep coming.

If you’ve never seen it, the amazing phenomenon of massive arrivals of hundreds of thousands of sea turtles coming ashore all at once to lay their eggs on Costa Rica’s beaches is one of the world’s most spectacular nature events.

Olive Ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) are world famous for their arribadas (meaning “arrivals” in Spanish) at Ostional National Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica.

Founded in 1984, this protected beach on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica is the second largest nesting site in the world for Olive Ridley sea turtles, along with Leatherback and Pacific Green sea turtles.

Excited to have spent another delightful day with the Carlton couple as they celebrate their 8th wedding anniversary.
They immersed themselves in three tours in one day, discovering the rainforest and its wildlife together!

Their day began with a guided tour to witness one of the area's most stunning waterfalls, Llanos del Cortés, a true gem. Following that, they ventured through the verdant rainforest, admiring the variety of plant life and enjoying the tranquil sounds of nature.

As they sipped their freshly brewed coffee and indulged in decadent chocolates, the breathtaking view of the Miravalles Volcano provided a stunning backdrop for their evening. The steam rising from the volcano added an element of mystery and intrigue to the landscape, making it a truly unforgettable experience.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the scene, they couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and wonder at the beauty of nature surrounding them.

Did you know that today is a special and unique day for us Guanacastecos?

Guanacaste’s Annexation to Costa Rica

The Annexation of Guanacaste Day, celebrated on July 25th, commemorates the annexation of the province of Guanacaste to Costa Rica, which occurred in 1824 – prior to this year, Guanacaste was part of Nicaragua.

Due to the fact that Nicaragua was active in many civil wars at the time, Guanacaste’s inhabitants requested to be annexed to Costa Rica. The Central American Federation approved the annexation; hence Guanacaste became a part of Costa Rica.

The ‘Guanacastecos’ have always been well identified with Costa Rica and take pride in being a part of this country. Proof of this is their famous slogan ‘de la patria por nuestra voluntad’, which means ‘part of this country by our own choice’. This annexation by choice celebrates Costa Rica’s core values of democracy.

The Guanacaste Day is celebrated with a nationwide public holiday and bustling celebratory activities and events, especially in the province of Guanacaste. On public holidays, all banks, government offices, post offices and other commercial centers close, thus evidencing the great importance of the Guanacaste Day.

The Celebration

The celebration of Guanacaste’s annexation is comprised by parades, folk dances, typical music, cattle shows and more. The parades involve children marching to the park at the center of town, while wearing masks and dressing up as a variety of personages.
Bullfights are also typical of the Guanacaste Day celebration.
However, bullfights in Costa Rica are very different than those in Spain. Tico style of bullfighting does not involve killing the animal; it’s all about young unarmed men teasing a bull or cow around a ring for a few minutes.

Guanacaste’s streets fill out with handicrafts and typical Costa Rican food like tamales and grilled meat with tortillas. Concerts, fireworks and folk dances are also part of the celebration. The most popular typical dances that occur during this celebration include the popular ‘Caballito Nicoyano’ and the ‘Punto Guanacasteco’. Also involved in the celebration of the annexation of Guanacaste is the music of Costa Rica’s national instrument, the marimba.

What was annexed?

Bagaces and Las Cañas (known today as Cañas) and the regions of Tilaran, Las Juntas and Abangares, have always been Costa Rican territories. Prior to 1824, Costa Rica’s border to the northwest was the Tempisque River, and therefore the valleys of Bagaces, Las Cañas, Tilaran, Las Juntas and Abangares were part of Costa Rica, thence they were never annexed.

Come and celebrate with us this special day! 🎉 Be part of our culture and support local entrepreneurs! 🛍️
