So, after the boa release, my peeps said they saw the croc in the creek. Quite unprepared, we went to investigate and, hopefully capture/release said reptile. Sure enough, after 2 attempts with a short rope and no shoes, a black hawk flew in and I took that as an omen to give up before somebody loses an eye.

I was wrong, it’s an 8 footer! Had Gallo Pinto in its coils. Pried it’s mouth off and uncoiled it and bagged it solo… pura c**o pelado!

Pristimantis gaigei (Dunn, 1931)

Una de las especies más variables dentro del género en Centro América y norte de Colombia. En realidad, siento que se debe proceder con un estudio filogeográfico para determinar si realmente todo lo Que se considera hoy dia gaigei es igual al sensu stricto.

La especie fue descrita por Dunn en 1931 con localidad tipo en "Fort Randolph, Panama Canal Zone", Panamá, con lo cual este morfo del centro de panamá debería ser el típico. En Costa Rica la especie es de las más coloridas del género y aparentemente es un mimo casi perfecto del dendrobátido venenoso Phyllobates vittatus. Lo curioso es que en su área de distribución, no existe tal especie, sino otra del mismo género, P. lugubris, que es levemente parecido. ¿Para qué una especie no tóxica querría parecerse a otra que no existe en su zona y no a una que sí ocurre? ¿Tal vez en tiempos pretéritos si eran simpátricos?

En Panamà, contra más al sureste lo encuentres, menos evidentes van a ser las bandas dorsolaterales, ya que en esa zona no existe ningún Phyllobates. Y en Colombia, donde tampoco existe ningún modelo para mimetismo, P. gaigei no posee ningún tipo de rayas.

Etimología: Gaige + L. –i, sufijo que indica el genitivo de nombres y sustantivos masculinos. Aunque el autor no hace mención definida, en la descripción nombra a la Sra. (Mrs.) Gaige (Helen Beulah Thompson Gaige), herpetóloga norteamericana. Si la especie estúviera dedicada a ella, el epíteto especíico sería gaigeae. De hecho, Taylor (1952) corrigió injustificadamente el nombre a gaigeae. Adicionalmente existe la posibilidad que la especie haya sido dedicada a su marido, Frederick McMahon Gaige, entomólogo estadounidense.

I’m guessing, but I can’t imagine a confirmed sighting of a giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) on the Osa in the last 30 years!
I’d flip out seeing one of these!

This young tamandua passed me on the lower Matapalo hairpin and nearly sent me into connector guardrail! Sheesh, open your nose buddy!

About 5 days ago these were eggs totally exposed and ding predated by hermit crabs. We reburied what was left and today relished the eruption of the nest!
Either Green or, Olive Ridleys. Not sure.

These cuzukos (armadillos) have been wreaking havoc on Cabina Las Olas with their tunneling. I finally bagged this male and relocated him far down the road. I only hope his babe bails on her own now.

Spent the predawn hours extracting my neighbor from his bed beneath the fallen Jobo tree that crushed his house. I am very grateful for the other community members who assisted and the Bomberos de Puerto Jimenez. Possible fractured pelvis.
