🇺🇸The South Pacific of Costa Rica is a biodiversity hotspot both on land and sea. Its waters are the nursery for many species of aquatic animals such as hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, tiger sharks, humpback whales and sea turtles.

Mangrove forests are ecosystems of equal importance for migratory bird species. Finally, its tropical rainforests are the home of a great number of living beings.

How important is the conservation and good management of natural resources of the Pacific South of Costa Rica to guarantee a future for our new generations and preserve one of the last gems of the world.

🇨🇷 El sur Pacifico de Costa Rica es un hotspot en biodiversidad tanto en mar como tierra. Sus aguas son la guardería de muchos especies de animales acuáticos como tiburones ma****los , tiburones toros , tiburones tigres , ballenas jorobadas y tortugas marinas.

Los bosques de manglar son ecosistemas de igual importancia para especie de aves migratorias. para finalizar sus bosques tropicales lluviosos alberga gran sin número de seres vivientes .

Que importante es la conservación y el buen manejo de recursos naturales de el sur pacifico de Costa Rica para garantizar un futuro para nuestras nuevas generaciones y preservar una de las últimas gemas del mundo.

🇺🇸The scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) is listed as globally endangered on the IUCN’s Red List. The principal conservation problem facing this species is its population decline. This problem, driven by the high economic value of its fins and the consumption of its meat, has led to the species being overfished during all stages of its life.

The conservation of this species is of utmost importance for the well-being of the oceans. The change and creation of laws that protect sharks, stopping the demand for their meat are steps that must be taken as soon as possible.

El principal problema de conservación que enfrenta esta especie es la disminución de su población. 🇺🇸 This species is probably the most common to see in the Pacific of Costa Rica, however its conservation status lists it as endangered.
Incidental fishing, the plastic that is mistaken for food by them and the illegal extraction of their eggs for human consumption are some of the main reasons for the decline of their populations.

Currently there are conservation programs and organizations that are dedicated to a better understanding of reproductive cycles, migratory routes and jointly work with local communities to achieve better conservation of this and other species of sea turtles.

🇨🇷 Esta especie es probablemente la más común de ver en el Pacífico de Costa Rica, sin embargo, su estado de conservación la cataloga como en peligro de extinción.
La pesca incidental, el plástico que ellos confunden con comida y la extracción ilegal de sus huevos para el consumo humano son algunas de las principales razones del declive de sus poblaciones.
Actualmente existen programas y organizaciones de conservación que se dedican a un mejor conocimiento de los ciclos reproductivos, rutas migratorias y trabajan en conjunto con las comunidades locales para lograr una mejor conservación de esta y otras especies de tortugas marinas.

🇺🇸 The Pacific of Costa Rica has one of the largest population of S. longirostris, however, tuna fishery has been the main reason why eastern tropical pacific population has declined 80 percent in 20 years from 2 million to 400,000.
It is of crucial importance that local governments take fisheries regulation measures in the following years before it is too late.
The determination of responsible fishing areas and the creation of marine biological corridors between protected areas in Costa Rica are points in which work should be done as soon as possible to achieve the protection of marine species such as spinner dolphins.

🇨🇷 El Pacífico de Costa Rica tiene una de las poblaciones más grandes de S. longirostris, sin embargo, la pesca de atún ha sido la razón principal por la que la población del Pacífico tropical oriental ha disminuido un 80 por ciento en 20 años de 2 millones a 400.000.

🇺🇸 This is an emblematic species for marine conservation in Costa Rica, beacuse humans have brought S. lewini to the limit of its extinction.
A few days ago the government of Costa Rica voted in favor of a reform of the law in order to give to the hammerhead sharks and other marine species the position they deserve as wildlife; and thus stop their fishing and commercialization.
Those are great news for the conservation of the natural resources of planet Earth, but it is still a sad reality that every minute millions of animals around the world die to satisfy the insatiable thirst of human consumerism.

🇨🇷 Se trata de una especie emblemática para la conservación marina en Costa Rica, ya que el ser humano ha llevado a S. lewini al límite de su extinción.
Hace unos días el gobierno de Costa Rica votó a favor de una reforma a la ley para darle a los tiburones ma****lo y otras especies marinas el lugar que merecen como vida silvestre; y así detener su pesca y comercialización.

🇺🇸 It's going to be a long way before this little creature returns to main land. L. olivacea reaches its reproductive age until 25 -30 years of age, this makes the probability that a baby reaches its adult stage is 1 in 1000.

Loss of its habitat, pollution, caused by humans, such as Plastic and microplastic, global warming and natural predators are part of the dangers that these sea turtles must cross in order to survive.

Sea turtle conservation projects such as are very important for the future of these marine beings.

🇨🇷 Va ser un largo camino antes de que esta pequeña criatura vuelva a tierra firme. L. olivacea alcanza su edad reproductiva hasta los 25 -30 años de edad, esto hace que las probabilidades de que un bebé llegue a su estado adulto sea 1 de cada 1000.

Pérdida de su hábitat, contaminación, provocada por el ser humano, como plástico y microplastico, calentamiento global y depredadores naturales son parte de los peligros que estas tortugas marinas deben cruzar para poder sobrevivir.

Proyectos de conservación de tortugas marinas como son muy importantes para el futuro de estos seres marinos.

🇺🇸 It was in November 2018 that I had the opportunity to meet this species during one of my visits to Lake Atitlán in Guatemala while and I waited for the boat that would take us to Jaibalito. From one of the docks of Panajachel we could see a group of birds in the lake among them were some Lesser Scaup and American coat.

Taking advantage of this moment, I took out my Omd E-M1 mark ll camera with the 300mm zuiko lens and with the Pro capture mode I was able to freeze this moment when the American coat began to fly.

🇨🇷 Fue en noviembre de 2018 que tuve la oportunidad de conocer esta especie durante una de mis visitas al lago Atitlán en Guatemala mientras Laura y yo esperábamos el bote que nos llevaría a Jaibalito. Desde uno de los muelles de Panajachel pudimos ver un grupo de aves en el lago entre ellas había algúnos Porrones bolas y Fochas americanas. Aprovechando este momento, saqué mi cámara Omd E-M1 mark ll con el lente zuiko 300mm y con el modo de Procapture pude congelar este momento en el que el Focha americana comenzaba a volar.

🇺🇲 Black terns nest in large freshwater wetlands, usually in dense marshes on the edges of shallow lakes of the open prairies or northern forests.
Winter migrants move down to Central America and part of South America as far as Colombia in the Pacific or Amazonia in the Atlantic slope.
Black tern population declined by estimated of 51% of its population this is consecuented of climate change and reduction of insect populations by agricultural pesticide, destruction of its nesting areas in North America and in Central America may have been affected by sharp declines in prey species, especially small fish.

🇨🇷 Los charranes negros anidan en grandes humedales de agua dulce, generalmente en densos pantanos en los bordes de lagos poco profundos de las praderas abiertas o los bosques del norte.
Los migrantes invernales se trasladan a América Central y parte de América del Sur hasta Colombia en el Pacífico o Amazonia en la vertiente atlántica.
La población de charrán negro disminuyó en aproximadamente un 51% de su población, esto se debe al cambio climático y la reducción de las poblaciones de insectos por pesticidas agrícolas, la destrucción de sus áreas de anidación en América del Norte y en América Central puede haber sido afectada por una fuerte disminución en las especies de presas , especialmente peces pequeños.

🇺🇲 In front of my eyes there is one of the largest mammals on planet Earth. As soon as I look at it, a deep feeling fills me up that in the end we are nothing in the immense existence of the cosmos.
I ask to myself
- Is this a simple coincidence that I am there at the specific moment with my camera pointing to the right place and in a fraction of seconds I can capture one of my best experiences as a living being?
- After this, I can not stop to think what will be the future of this gentle animal with everything that is currently happening in our societies and the destruction of our home. I do feel so responsible for ensuring a better future for that whale and planet Earth in general.
-Hopefully one of my pictures and one of my thoughts can touch the soul of a human being and we will start to make the collective change for a better present.

🇨🇷 Frente a mis ojos tengo uno de los mamíferos más grandes del planeta Tierra. Tan pronto como lo miro, me llena una profunda sensación de que al final no somos nada en la inmensa existencia del cosmos.

Parasitic Jaegers, known as arctic skuas in Europe, are fast-flying relatives of gulls with a piratical lifestyle. They breed on the Arctic tundra, where they prey mainly on birds and their eggs. They spend the rest of the year on the open ocean, harrying other seabirds and sometimes attacking in groups, until they give up their catch. Jaegers come in several color morphs. Immatures can be extremely difficult to separate from other jaeger species. (the Cornell lab).

Los Págalo parasitarios, conocidos como skúas árticas en Europa, son parientes de las gaviotas que vuelan rápido y tienen un estilo de vida pirata. Se reproducen en la tundra ártica, donde se alimentan principalmente de aves y sus huevos. Pasan el resto del año en mar abierto, hostigando a otras aves marinas y, a veces, atacando en grupos, hasta que abandonan sus capturas. Los Pagalos vienen en varias variantes de color. 🇺🇸 2020 has been an incredibly challenging year… It has brought hardship to every part of the globe, making conservation work even more difficult.

The truth is that human beings are the biggest destroyers of the natural world. But we are also able to do great and wonderful things. Let’s see in this new beginning the opportunity to take action, to save wildlife and protect our planet, to not loose things that we will regret.

We believe that the power of the individual is real. That the youth is hope for the future by cultivating more environmental awareness. We all need to keep doing whatever we can. However small it looks like, at the end of the day, every action counts and makes a difference. Anything is still better than doing nothing.

If each of us continue to act with this purpose, spreading hope and motivation, we will all stand together to build a better world! 💪🏽🌿💙
