Serbia's cities are fascinating. However, it's Serbia's towns and villages that offer beautiful treasures worth exploring.

St. Johns Church is a small church in the town of Vučje, roughly 15 kms from the city of Leskovac.

This gorgeous little church was built in 1938 using rock from the near by Kukavica Mountain. The church sits next to the Vučjanka river and is surrounded by nature. Calming sounds of the near by waterfall just adds to the ambience ❤️

📍City Hall, Novi Sad

Situated in the heart of Novi Sad, on Liberty Square, Novi Sad's City Hall is a gorgeous monumental neo-Renaissance building and the seat of the Mayor of Novi Sad.

Built in 1895, it is identical to the city hall in the Austrian city Graz.

The building has four domes, one in each corner, as well as a tower with a balcony. Prior to World War II, the tower had a bell, known to the residents of Novi Sad as "Matilda".

Out of the 273 mosques that once stood in Belgrade, Bajrakli Mosque is Belgrade's only surviving mosque from the period of the Ottoman Empire.

The mosque was built around 1575. The name 'Bajrakli' comes from the Turkish word for flag - Baryak. As Belgrade's main mosque, it had a muwaqqit who calculated the time of prayer. A flag would be raised to notify the other mosques in Belgrade that it was time for prayer.

During Austrian rule, between 1717 and 1739, the Austrians converted the mosque into a Catholic church, while destroying most of Belgrade's mosques. However, it was converted back into a mosque in 1741 upon the return of Ottoman rule.

As practically all remaining mosques were either destroyed or damaged in the following battles for Belgrade, in 1868 Prince Mihailo Obrenović gave orders for a mosque to be selected for restoration, with Bajrakli Mosque being selected.

Today, it remains as Belgrade's only active mosque.

📍 Skull Tower, Niš

On the 19th of May 1809, 3,000 rebels under the command of Stevan Sinđelić, were attacked by Ottoman forces on Čegar Hill, just outside the city of Niš.

Outnumbered and lacking coordination, Sinđelić knew the battle was lost. Knowing that they will be impaled when captured, Sinđelić fired at his entrenchment's gun powder magazine, setting of a massive explosion, killing all in the vicinity.

The Ottoman's went on to build a tower from the skulls of the rebels, as a warning to residents contemplating rebellion. Built with sand and limestone, the 4.5 metres tall tower originally consisted of 952 skulls. Today 58 remain embedded in its walls.

A magnificent example of romanticism in Serbian architecture, the Old Edifice (or in Serbian known as Staro zdanje) is a highlight for those exploring the wonderful park of Bukovička banja in Aranđelovac.

Built by Prince Mihailo Obrenović in 1865, it was initially intended to be the House of Assembly for the Principality of Serbia. However, as Serbia's capital was moved to Belgrade instead, the building became the summer residence to the Prince of Serbia. The residence was famous for hosting exquisite formal balls that was the talk of the country.

With the completion of the Belgrade-Aranđelovac railway in 1906, it was transformed into a hotel, perfect for tourists visiting the local spa's.

The financial troubles of the 1990's and continued lack of investment have left the hotel empty of guests and waiting for investment. However, in 2020, its ownership has returned to the local municipality, who intends to restore its former charm.

📍Aranđelovac

ℹ️ Fun Fact: Upon completion, with 9.000m2 of floor space, it was amongst the largest buildings in Serbia.

With growing popularity for theatre plays in Subotica, a permanent theatre finally started construction in 1853. Projected by Hungarian architect János Skultéti, the theatre was completed a year later, which included a hotel.

The theatre was devastated by a fire during the First World War, precisely on the 2nd of March 1915. The outer facade however remained undamaged. It wasn't until 1926 that reconstruction began, being completed the same year.

Although not much of the original building remains, Subotica's National Theatre is a wonderful gem in the heart of the city.

📍National Theatre, Subotica

ℹ️ Fun Fact: Upon it's completion, it was the name of the hotel that stood above the entrance of the theatre. It wasn't until it's reconstruction in 1904 the words 'National Theatre' stood above the entrance.

20% of Serbia's energy is supplied from renewable sources.

The first wind farm in Serbia was completed in 2011. Since then, the number of wind farms have expanded to 9, with another 4 under construction. Most of the wind farms in operation are located in the South Banat District of Vojvodina.

Serbia intends to double its usage of renewable energy by 2040, following global trends in seeking for a cleaner environment.
