The old, bohemian quarter of Belgrade, Skadarlija, arose during the late 19th and early 20th century when its inns were the gathering place of the best known names in Belgrade. It is frequently compared to the Montmartre of Paris, both in appearance as well as the exuberant and dynamic artistic atmosphere. In the second half of the 19th century, the Gipsy settlements slowly vanished and the former sheds were replaced by more sturdy houses accommodating artisans, caterers and petty clerks. Houses were built spontaneously, under a strong Eastern influence, and yards were linked with gates through which one could always run over to the neighbor’s. There was a habit of planting oleanders in wooden barrels along the street. They formed a sort of fence creating comfortable shade for the residents of Skadarlija in front of their houses, at the same time endowing the street with a unique atmosphere. The proximity of the National Theatre and the former operatic and vaudevillian hall of today’s Balkan Cinema made this area popular and attractive. Following the demolition of the Dardaneli Inn in 1901 - which lay in the location of today’s National Museum - actors, writers, poets and ordinary folk moved to the Skadarlija inns. Стари, боемски део Београда, Скадарлија, настао је крајем 19. и почетком 20. века када су њене кафане биле стециште најпознатијих имена културног Београда. Најчешће је пореде са париским Монмартром, како по изгледу, тако и по веселој, узаврелој уметничкој атмосфери. Овај део града настао је у првој половини 19. века, а 1872. је Скадарска улица добила име, када је извршена и нумерација кућа. У Скадарлији су некада становали многи познати књижевници, глумци, сликари и новинари. Боемско обележје Скадарлија поприма од 1901. године, када су се, после рушења познате кафане "Дарданели", њени гости преселили у кафане Скадарлије.
