Cruisin' the Rhumb Lines with SV Cruzan Rhumb II

Cruisin' the Rhumb Lines with SV Cruzan Rhumb II NEW IN 2020! CR II is now available for day charters with Capt Gregg (USCG 50 ton master) at the helm. BYOB. Email us for quotes.

This page documents the trials and tribulations of preparing and cruising our 2006 Leopard 40, S/V Cruzan Rhumb II! Dania is an ER RN by profession, and Gregg is a retired USAF colonel. We have been cruising ever since we met as undergrads at Arizona State University in 1980. Gregg grew up on St Croix, USVI and Dania would come visit during summers. She picked up the sailing bug then, while Gregg

had had it for years (because back then if you didn't do something on the water, you didn't do much on the island!). In 2006, we coerced our good friends from our Washington DC assignment, Kevin (Cdr, USCG) and Sandy (realtor), into partnering with us to buy a Leopard to put into charter to assist with paying the mortgage. After 9 good years in the BVI, we bought our good friends and partners out and brought CR II home to Florida where we retired after 23 years in the USAF. As you can imagine, CR II needed a lot of TLC due to the bumps and bruises of charter life. Its amazing the idiots who are allowed to charter sail boats! Once the bumps and bruises were remedied, we began the refit for what we plan to be our retired life of cruising the rhumb lines (preferably south)! This site is intended to document the transformation of CR II from charter boat to cruising boat, and then to allow friends to monitor our progress of cruising the rhumb lines. We hope everyone enjoys it and we look forward to seeing a lot of you "out there!"

CRII needed a bit of hull paint repair when we got home from the world cruise... dock chafe wore off an area of hull paint and stripe paint. After some sanding, paint thinning, etc, got it squared away. Not perfect, but the 10 foot rule works 🤣👌

But he was a stud, nonetheless!! As Meg Ryan said, "Goose, you stud, take me to bed or lose me forever!" 👍🤣

My morning chore...recovering my main halyard from the top of the mast after my retrieval line failed when measuring the mast for the new sail. Thanks to a Tiki bar buddy and my Admiral for a flawless up and down trip.

All good things come to an end...spent our last day touring the Buddhist temple by the Airport that is accessed by a glass cable car. Pitched a tent in airport until our 0030 departure from HK to Doha. 8.5 hours later we are now in a lounge awaiting our 14.5 hour Doha-MIA flight. Boarding in 15 minutes...

Disembarked Celebrity Solstice yesterday and toured Hong Kong. Busy and EXPENSIVE city! Going back today and walking the areas we found intriguing from the Hop On Hop Off bus yesterday. Great hotel room views.

Great tour of Hanoi. Surreal to see the infamous (to US aircrew) Hanoi Hilton, formally Maison Centrale or Hoa LA prison. Sobering to stand outside its walls. They keep Uncle Ho preserved in his impressive mausoleum with the assistance of Russian experts who are in charge of preserving Lenin. Lots of Buddhist religious history here (especially for a country that is officially atheist). Surprised by the amount of free market capitalism going on...seems the power structure figured out financial totalitarianism was about to sink the country and they wisely changed course about 10 years ago. Hanoi seems like NY in many respects...without the crime.

I bet things look a little different from 50 years ago at 100'/540 knots! 👍
