Guia comunitária de Rincão está treinando a coletar os dados que serão usados para foto-identificação de orcas pigmeias que encontramos durante a última pesquisa marinha. A lente fotográfica de 300 mm nos permite manter distância segura do grupo de golfinhos e evitar perturbações. Fotos de golfinhos são muito importantes e ajudam a confirmar a espécie usando a marcação nas barbatanas dorsais ou corpo, também a identificar animais de maneira individual e seu movimentação no habitat. Wooohooo!!! Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) - the first BIG visitors of the newly designated protected area in Santiago- Parque Natural Baia do Inferno e Monte Angra (PNBIMA, Decreto Regulementar No 3/2021). Total area of the PA is 21 096 ha, marine part 17 470 ha. And this is the first marine protected area in Santiago. We send BIG thanks to fishers Midino and Denilson from Porto Mosquito for sharing the video. Participatory monitoring works!! Mobula ray/ Santiago island

During the participatory monitoring training off the coast of Porto Mosquito, Santiago island, community marine guides and project staff encountered a real treasure- a Mobula ray! In Cabo Verde two species were confirmed to date: M. tarapacana and M. thurstoni. Both species are listed as Endangered in IUCN Red List (2019). Their coastal and offshore distribution, and tendency to aggregate makes mobulid rays particularly susceptible to bycatch in purse seine and longline fisheries, targeted capture in artisanal fisheries, and incidental entanglement. Mobula rays are easy to target because of their large size, slow swimming speed, tendency to aggregate, and their general lack of human avoidance. Despite being unintentionally caught, mobulid rays are typically kept because of their high trade value. Even when discarded alive, for example from tuna purse seine fisheries, they are often injured and have high post-release mortality.
