The historical city of Willemstad consists mainly of four districts, Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo & Pietermaai. Together, these four districts’ forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Inner-City Districts boasts two thirds of the island historic monumental buildings. These monumental buildings are from different eras back in time, ranging from colonial architecture and extravagant mansions to Old European influenced designs.

Ever wonder why this beautiful island is so rich in colors?

In 1817, Governor-General Albert Kikkert decreed that houses were no longer to be painted white. It was believed that the brightness of the tropical sun reflecting off-white walls was damaging to the eyes.

So, it became a local custom of painting houses red, yellow, blue, and green.

This is very noticeable in Punda and nearby districts, but can also be seen all across the island.
