[ BUTTERFLY FISH ]

The butterfly fish family’s name originates from the striking colours which the different species possess. Featured here is a native to the Western Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, the Banded butterfly. The black vertical bands on the body aid in camouflage. One of the bands covers the eye, making it harder for predators to determine which end of the body is the head or the tail. The predators are confused and are unaware as to which end to strike or in what direction the butterfly fish is likely to flee. Additionally, the butterfly fish is known for monogamous pairing and may mate for life. Often you find the couple together foraging the reef for small worms and coral polyps.
