While the aircraft at Elvin's Plane Wreck is interesting enough to explore to be worth the trip to the site, most divers also spend time drifting across the surrounding reef. The gentle reef slope on which the wreckage sits is dominated by incredibly rugose habitat that supports a wide range of coral species including brain, lettuce, pencil, massive starlet and pillar corals. Large coral mounds punctuate the gentle sloping reef which is similar in structure to many of the reefs farther along the headland toward Watamula.

The complex habitat supports large moral eels, lobsters, ocean triggerfish, barracuda and porcupinefish. Smaller species, such as sergeant majors and blue chromis have colonized the wreckage while the occasional eagle ray and schools of bogas can be seen out on the
surrounding reef.

Are you an adventurous eater? Try these local festive dishes. Locally called 'sult', pickled pig ears, is a holiday appetizer. Pig ears mainly consist of cartilage with little protein, which is why they are boiled and soaked for hours before preparation. The salted pig ears are commonly thinly sliced in strips and soaked in vinegar and spices to further tenderize the ears. Slices of onion, peppercorn and cloves are traditionally added to the mix. Sult fanatics sometimes add bay leaves and pimento peppers to their sult also. Also pictured, Pekelé. Carefully prepared with dried salted herring mixed with a perfect balance of vinegar, onions, cloves, peppercorns and bay leaves, pekelé is considered a pickled holiday delicacy amongst locals. Pekelé has a peculiar, but pleasant taste and is often served with crunchy bread to balance out the intense flavor.
