Our final day in Slovakia was spent in the capitalโ€ฆ everything is very central so we didnโ€™t need to drive anywhere which was lovely.

We firstly went in search of the Blue Church or Church of St Elizabeth, unfortunately this was closed but we got to see the outside which wasโ€ฆ. Blue

After this we went to the Old Town hall which was really interesting โ€“ we got a great view up the top of the clock tower as well and got to see the cannon ball that is still lodged in the side of the tower.

Next on our list was to find the well-known statues of Bratislava and pose with them and finally we made our way to the Castle and watched the sunset on the river. Bratislava is really beautiful

We loved doing quirky different things when we travel so you can imagine how excited we were when we stumbled onto this experience.

To be honest, we donโ€™t even know what to call this โ€“ it isnโ€™t advertised very wellโ€ฆ the only reason we found this is because we found some random Instagram photo and went into google overdrive to find out what on earth it was, where in Slovakia it was and how we go about having a go.

Basically, there are two/three times you can go a day and you have to go in groups as there is only one train track and it pretty much works like a one way system โ€“ you cycle the 10km to the picnic area (the cycle is easy) โ€“ have a little picnic then after a certain time you can make your way back.

Very simple, and so very cool and fun. I have never seen our boys laugh, cheer and squeal as much as they did on this and I would totally recommend this to anyone in Slovakiaโ€ฆ it is so different and such a clever way to keep a disused train track in use.

On our way back to Bratislava we decided to stop off at Banskรก Bystrica as there is an amazing museum about the National Slovak uprise. This museum was very well set out and focused on educating kids as well as adults โ€“ one area is when you experience what it would have been like to be in the trenches during the war.

We learnt a lot about the history as everything was in English as well as Slovak and we really enjoyed learning.

Afterwards we walked around Banskรก Bystrica and had an amazing Kebab and then headed towards Hronec for our next adventure

We have been told how beautiful Koลกice is so we decided to spend the afternoon there and we are so glad we did.

There isnโ€™t a lot to do in Koลกice, however, just walking around the beautiful city was enough โ€“ the buildings are so beautiful and if you have time (after exploring St Elizabethโ€™s Cathedral) go around the side and take the walk up to the top of the bell tower. The view from there is gorgeous and you also get to see the beautifully colour roof of the church which you cannot see from the bottom.

Another great spot is the Singing fountainโ€ฆ all within a short walking distance.

There is a lot of fun things to do with the kids. We didnโ€™t have that much time there but we managed to fit in mountain biking, tatrabob and quadbikingโ€ฆ all within an hour.

Seeing the big smiles on the boys faces was priceless and having the Lomnicky Stit as a backdrop was awesome

We decided that we wanted to go to the top of Lomnickรฝ ลกtรญt very early in our planning of Slovakia, so booked the cable car online before we flew as there are only a certain amount of people that can do that a day and wanted to make sure we were one of them (or 4 of them).

The day wasnโ€™t the best but that cable car felt like it was the original from the 1940s so it was probably best that we were in cloud and couldnโ€™t see how high we were until we got to the top.

Once at the top it was amazing (and cold) โ€“ one minute we were in cloud โ€“ the next minute it was sunny and we have a breathtaking view. There is also a cute little cafรฉ there where we had a hot chocolate and looked at all the old photos on the wall โ€“ getting a glimpse of the history of the Lomnickรฝ ลกtรญt peak.

We found this quirky place on google and thought it would be funโ€ฆ turns out that it wasnโ€™t just funโ€ฆ it ended up being a highlight of our Slovakian trip for our two boys.

Tricklandia is filled with Optical illusions that you can become a part of. After taking your shoes off, you are given a quick run down on what is in the building and how everything worksโ€ฆ you then grab your camera and have fun.

Each illusion has instructions and also a spot for you to stand on to take the photo so that you are in the right spot and angle to create the illusion.

We were there for so long and took way too many photos. It was fun doing everything as a family and we had some real laughs (especially in the mirror maze where Fletcher ran straight into a mirror) โ€“ Definitely a place you should check out

While we were in the Slovak Paradise area we decided to go and explore the Ice caves โ€“ it was a lovely warm day so this sounded like a really refreshing choice โ€“ what we didnโ€™t really consider was the fact that these caves have ICE in themโ€ฆ so rocking up in your tshirts and thin hoodies is not the best ideaโ€ฆ lesson learned.

Even though we spent most of the time hearing our teeth chatterโ€ฆ it was quite impressive. Unfortunately for us the tour was in Slovak and not matter how hard we concentratedโ€ฆ we could not understand โ€“ we did get photos though and got to see what the inside of an ice cave looked like

If you ever want to go on a small hike in Europeโ€ฆ Sucha Bela is the best. I know that is quite a statement to make but we have done a lot of hiking in our lives and this trail is AMAZING. The one bit of advice I would say is start early. With it being such a stunning and fun trail means it is also a very popular trail. We have been told that you may need to queue when getting to the ladders etc so we started at 6.30am and had the whole place to ourselves.

The trail is 5.5km and mostly up hill however, due to the different terrains and the fact that it was a little challenging here and there โ€“ our boys didnโ€™t complain once and loved every minute of it.

If you go to Gozo you have to visit the Blue Hole and if you visit the Blue Hole you have to wear shoes that you donโ€™t mind getting wet and flip flops donโ€™t cut it.

To get to the Blue Hole you have to work your way around sharp rocks and there are places where you have to walk through the water but it is totally worth it. We went around March time and the weather was beautiful but the water was FREEZING. However, we had to go in for a dip as you canโ€™t go all the way there to just look at it.

We spent quite a bit of time there but the rocks are sharpโ€ฆ so to get from one section to the other means you have to do an interesting walk and at a very very slow pace.

This 200 year old windmill is one of the few surviving in Malta and was the main focal point of village life as it would provide everyone with flower for making of bread. When there was a breeze the Miller would blow through a triton shell to inform all the villagers to bring their grains to be grounded into flour.

This is the first windmill that we have ever been in and was fascinating to see how they would live in the windmill and how the windmill would grind the flour.

We decided to spend a day exploring Gozo so drove to the Ferry early in the morning and made the 25 minute ride to the gorgeous island. We didnโ€™t know whether to take the car or not but we are so glad that we did as most sights are quite spread out and it meant we got to see everything we wanted to see in one day.

Our highlights were the ruins of it-Tempji tal-ฤ gantija, Blue Hole and the Salt Pans. We were disappointed that the stunning Azure Window collapsed in 2017, however we still went there and could only imagine how amazing it would have been

Wowโ€ฆ. Just wow! This is a must if you are in Malta and the only way to see it is via boat but donโ€™t worry! It isnโ€™t expensive or too manic down at the harbour. You buy your ticket at the top of the slope then go down to the water and there is a friendly man with a clipboard and he tells you which boat to go on. Honestly, the whole operation is very smooth and it means that there is no underselling or bartering โ€“ you pay a set price and that is that.

I have no idea how these boats manage to go in the caves and close to the rocks without crashing but they doโ€ฆ and they totally know what they are doing.

But enough about the boatsโ€ฆ letโ€™s talk about the colour of the water. Shock horrorโ€ฆthe water is blue lol โ€“ but it isnโ€™t the colour that is amazingโ€ฆ it is the shade of the blue โ€“ never seen anything like it and the sea is so clear and clean โ€“ was lovely to see.

The boys have always wanted to try horse riding so we decided to do this in style by going to Golden Bay Horse riding and taking an hour-long trek through the country to a historic nature park overlooking the gorgeous blue sea.

Being an animal lover, it was nice to see how healthy the horses were as well as see how well treated they were.

Beverley and Mario were so lovely and patient as we were all very much beginners and the boys felt safe the whole time โ€“ even got enough confidence to ride solo at the very end.

Was a huge highlight of the trip

Did you know that Malta has around 30 towers along the coastline? For quite a small island that is a lot of look outs. So we had to check out one of the main ones and this was the Red Tower (also known as St Agathaโ€™s Tower). This tower was built between 1647 โ€“ 1649 and was the last big Bastioned tower built in Malta. We enjoyed exploring the tower, learning about what it was used for, picking up the cannon balls and of course the view was amazing

Our eyes were starting to glaze over as well). However, the colours and detail are breathtaking and the view from the top is stunning.

There are a few places that you need to see when in Valletta, we would suggest the 5D Malta Experience as a great way for you and your kids to learn the history of Malta. There is also the quirky mix of Malta and UK merging in certain areas and lets not forget about St Johnโ€™s Co-Cathedral, Upper and Lower Barrakka and the Triton Fountain

We had heard so much about Valletta so was worried that we would be disappointed but it is a beautiful as they say. Most of our time was spent walking around and looking at the buildings. All the streets are straight and there are some gorgeous small and narrow ones that we loved finding. We parked outside of Valetta and got the bus in as this was so much cheaper and less stressful than trying to get a park closer to the walled city.

While we were in the area, we thought that we would check out Ghar Hasan Cave. It did say it was closed so we were expecting to not be able to get it but were surprised to see that the gate was open and quite a few people were checking it out.

The footpath down is a bit ropey so we had to hold on to our little humans, however, it was worth it as the cave was very impressive โ€“ we decided to explore what looked like a little tunnel but when walking through it we noticed it open out to an even bigger cave so when going hereโ€ฆ definitely take a torch and check every spot. The view from the second cave was amazing!

Not far from Marsaxlokk is the stunning St Peterโ€™s pool. This is Maltaโ€™s most beautiful natural swimming pool and is at the tip of Delimara Point.

The sea is so clear and vibrant blue colour is breathtaking. It was quite chilly in April but it didnโ€™t stop the boys jumping off the cliff a few times.

This is very popular with the locals and you will need to bring everything with you as there arenโ€™t any facilities except for a small food shop. The rocks around the pool are nice and flat so you can just chill and sunbathe if you want

Marsaxlokk is a beautiful village on the coast and is said to be the oldest port on the island. This really should be on your list of places to visit and make sure that when you do visit, you visit early on a Sunday.

This gorgeous port comes alive on Sunday with its busy and bustling market where you can purchase fresh fish (to the point that are still moving on the stalls) to Playstation control sleeves. Well, those are two things that we purchased and if you go in April then the fresh strawberries are to die for.

We really enjoyed exploring around the market but also loved the colourful fishing boats on the water. Great photo opportunities and great memories.

Just outside of the Medina wall there are a lot of Catacombs. You have the smaller site โ€œSt Agathaโ€™s Catacombโ€ and then across the road is the bigger and more aimed at tourists St Paulโ€™s Catacombsโ€.

We recommend visiting St Agathaโ€™s first. The reason for this is because you can only visit these with a guide and you learn so much from this guide. You are shown how each catacomb tells us how much wealth the person had, whether they died with loved ones, how big their family was and what sort of ceremony occurred during this time. All of this gave us the knowledge we needed so that when we went across the road to St Paulโ€™s, where there is no guideโ€ฆ we were fine as we knew what we were looking at, the history of it all and what everything meant.

We enjoyed St Agathaโ€™s more as it was more intimate, however St Paulโ€™s is more impressive. We did try to see all of the catacombs in St Paulโ€™s but to be honest, once you had seen 3 or 4 of them, you have kind of seen them all.

The boys really enjoyed exploring and also trying to work out each spot and telling us about them which we were impressed with as it showed how much they learnt from the guide at St Agathaโ€™s.

This church is impressiveโ€ฆ You donโ€™t really need directions to it โ€“ just head towards Mosta and when you see the town in the distance you can straight away see the Mosta Rotunda that is towering above every home and building.

The interior is just as impressive as the size. You are firstly guided to the top of the church just below the dome, from here you can see the enormity of the space and also the beauty of it, work your way down the spiral staircase and then you get to go in to then marvel at the dome.

The story goes that on 9th April 1942, while around 300 worshippers were inside the church for evening Mass, a German aerial bomb crashed through the ceiling and fell to the floor within a few metres of everyone and did not explode. Of course this was looked at as a miracle and the legend of the Mosta Rotunda began.

We did spend way too long trying to work out where the hole on the dome was and to be honestโ€ฆ I donโ€™t think any of us got the spotโ€ฆ that is how good the reconstruction was. However, we thoroughly enjoyed learning about this moment and seeing the photos and the size of the bomb.

Just across from the Grotto, you will find the Mellieha Air-raid shelter and this is a definite. The cost is little to enter (it was only a few euros) and it closes at 3pm so make sure you get there before then.

We were amazed at how big it was. There were so many rooms and also a maternity ward. It was hard to comprehend that it was all dug by hand and was able to shelter everyone in the town during World War 2.

We were given a quick run through by one of the guides there and he was happy to answer questions, we were then left to our own devices and the boys loved it. The tunnel felt like it went on for miles (it is only 500m but feels longer) and along the way there are bits of information about this shelter and you got to learn about the strict rules on how big a room was allowed to be and how each family had to disperse the stones/rocks that was created from digging their own rooms.
