𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒗𝒂, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

Our final day in Slovakia was spent in the capital… everything is very central so we didn’t need to drive anywhere which was lovely.

We firstly went in search of the Blue Church or Church of St Elizabeth, unfortunately this was closed but we got to see the outside which was…. Blue

After this we went to the Old Town hall which was really interesting – we got a great view up the top of the clock tower as well and got to see the cannon ball that is still lodged in the side of the tower.

Next on our list was to find the well-known statues of Bratislava and pose with them and finally we made our way to the Castle and watched the sunset on the river. Bratislava is really beautiful

𝑪𝒚𝒌𝒍𝒐𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒚 𝑯𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒄, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

We loved doing quirky different things when we travel so you can imagine how excited we were when we stumbled onto this experience.

To be honest, we don’t even know what to call this – it isn’t advertised very well… the only reason we found this is because we found some random Instagram photo and went into google overdrive to find out what on earth it was, where in Slovakia it was and how we go about having a go.

Basically, there are two/three times you can go a day and you have to go in groups as there is only one train track and it pretty much works like a one way system – you cycle the 10km to the picnic area (the cycle is easy) – have a little picnic then after a certain time you can make your way back.

Very simple, and so very cool and fun. I have never seen our boys laugh, cheer and squeal as much as they did on this and I would totally recommend this to anyone in Slovakia… it is so different and such a clever way to keep a disused train track in use.

𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒌á 𝑩𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

On our way back to Bratislava we decided to stop off at Banská Bystrica as there is an amazing museum about the National Slovak uprise. This museum was very well set out and focused on educating kids as well as adults – one area is when you experience what it would have been like to be in the trenches during the war.

We learnt a lot about the history as everything was in English as well as Slovak and we really enjoyed learning.

Afterwards we walked around Banská Bystrica and had an amazing Kebab and then headed towards Hronec for our next adventure

𝑲𝒐š𝒊𝒄𝒆, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

We have been told how beautiful Košice is so we decided to spend the afternoon there and we are so glad we did.

There isn’t a lot to do in Košice, however, just walking around the beautiful city was enough – the buildings are so beautiful and if you have time (after exploring St Elizabeth’s Cathedral) go around the side and take the walk up to the top of the bell tower. The view from there is gorgeous and you also get to see the beautifully colour roof of the church which you cannot see from the bottom.

Another great spot is the Singing fountain… all within a short walking distance.

𝑭𝒖𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒌𝒊𝒅𝒔, 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉 𝑻𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒔, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

There is a lot of fun things to do with the kids. We didn’t have that much time there but we managed to fit in mountain biking, tatrabob and quadbiking… all within an hour.

Seeing the big smiles on the boys faces was priceless and having the Lomnicky Stit as a backdrop was awesome

𝑳𝒐𝒎𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒌ý š𝒕í𝒕, 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉 𝑻𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒔, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

We decided that we wanted to go to the top of Lomnický štít very early in our planning of Slovakia, so booked the cable car online before we flew as there are only a certain amount of people that can do that a day and wanted to make sure we were one of them (or 4 of them).

The day wasn’t the best but that cable car felt like it was the original from the 1940s so it was probably best that we were in cloud and couldn’t see how high we were until we got to the top.

Once at the top it was amazing (and cold) – one minute we were in cloud – the next minute it was sunny and we have a breathtaking view. There is also a cute little café there where we had a hot chocolate and looked at all the old photos on the wall – getting a glimpse of the history of the Lomnický štít peak.

𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂, 𝑽𝒚𝒔𝒐𝒌é 𝑻𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒚, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

We found this quirky place on google and thought it would be fun… turns out that it wasn’t just fun… it ended up being a highlight of our Slovakian trip for our two boys.

Tricklandia is filled with Optical illusions that you can become a part of. After taking your shoes off, you are given a quick run down on what is in the building and how everything works… you then grab your camera and have fun.

Each illusion has instructions and also a spot for you to stand on to take the photo so that you are in the right spot and angle to create the illusion.

We were there for so long and took way too many photos. It was fun doing everything as a family and we had some real laughs (especially in the mirror maze where Fletcher ran straight into a mirror) – Definitely a place you should check out

𝑫𝒐𝒃š𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒌á 𝑰𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒗𝒆, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒆, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

While we were in the Slovak Paradise area we decided to go and explore the Ice caves – it was a lovely warm day so this sounded like a really refreshing choice – what we didn’t really consider was the fact that these caves have ICE in them… so rocking up in your tshirts and thin hoodies is not the best idea… lesson learned.

Even though we spent most of the time hearing our teeth chatter… it was quite impressive. Unfortunately for us the tour was in Slovak and not matter how hard we concentrated… we could not understand – we did get photos though and got to see what the inside of an ice cave looked like

𝑺𝒖𝒄𝒉á 𝑩𝒆𝒍á, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒆, 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒂

If you ever want to go on a small hike in Europe… Sucha Bela is the best. I know that is quite a statement to make but we have done a lot of hiking in our lives and this trail is AMAZING. The one bit of advice I would say is start early. With it being such a stunning and fun trail means it is also a very popular trail. We have been told that you may need to queue when getting to the ladders etc so we started at 6.30am and had the whole place to ourselves.

The trail is 5.5km and mostly up hill however, due to the different terrains and the fact that it was a little challenging here and there – our boys didn’t complain once and loved every minute of it.

𝘽𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙚, 𝙂𝙤𝙯𝙤, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙖

If you go to Gozo you have to visit the Blue Hole and if you visit the Blue Hole you have to wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and flip flops don’t cut it.

To get to the Blue Hole you have to work your way around sharp rocks and there are places where you have to walk through the water but it is totally worth it. We went around March time and the weather was beautiful but the water was FREEZING. However, we had to go in for a dip as you can’t go all the way there to just look at it.

We spent quite a bit of time there but the rocks are sharp… so to get from one section to the other means you have to do an interesting walk and at a very very slow pace.

𝙏𝙖’ 𝙆𝙤𝙡𝙖 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙡, 𝙂𝙤𝙯𝙤, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙖

This 200 year old windmill is one of the few surviving in Malta and was the main focal point of village life as it would provide everyone with flower for making of bread. When there was a breeze the Miller would blow through a triton shell to inform all the villagers to bring their grains to be grounded into flour.

This is the first windmill that we have ever been in and was fascinating to see how they would live in the windmill and how the windmill would grind the flour.

𝙂𝙤𝙯𝙤, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙖

We decided to spend a day exploring Gozo so drove to the Ferry early in the morning and made the 25 minute ride to the gorgeous island. We didn’t know whether to take the car or not but we are so glad that we did as most sights are quite spread out and it meant we got to see everything we wanted to see in one day.

Our highlights were the ruins of it-Tempji tal-Ġgantija, Blue Hole and the Salt Pans. We were disappointed that the stunning Azure Window collapsed in 2017, however we still went there and could only imagine how amazing it would have been

𝘽𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙤, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙖

Wow…. Just wow! This is a must if you are in Malta and the only way to see it is via boat but don’t worry! It isn’t expensive or too manic down at the harbour. You buy your ticket at the top of the slope then go down to the water and there is a friendly man with a clipboard and he tells you which boat to go on. Honestly, the whole operation is very smooth and it means that there is no underselling or bartering – you pay a set price and that is that.

I have no idea how these boats manage to go in the caves and close to the rocks without crashing but they do… and they totally know what they are doing.

But enough about the boats… let’s talk about the colour of the water. Shock horror…the water is blue lol – but it isn’t the colour that is amazing… it is the shade of the blue – never seen anything like it and the sea is so clear and clean – was lovely to see.

𝙂𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝘽𝙖𝙮 𝙃𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙂𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝘽𝙖𝙮, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙖

The boys have always wanted to try horse riding so we decided to do this in style by going to Golden Bay Horse riding and taking an hour-long trek through the country to a historic nature park overlooking the gorgeous blue sea.

Being an animal lover, it was nice to see how healthy the horses were as well as see how well treated they were.

Beverley and Mario were so lovely and patient as we were all very much beginners and the boys felt safe the whole time – even got enough confidence to ride solo at the very end.

Was a huge highlight of the trip

𝙍𝙚𝙙 𝙏𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧, 𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙝𝙖, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙖

Did you know that Malta has around 30 towers along the coastline? For quite a small island that is a lot of look outs. So we had to check out one of the main ones and this was the Red Tower (also known as St Agatha’s Tower). This tower was built between 1647 – 1649 and was the last big Bastioned tower built in Malta. We enjoyed exploring the tower, learning about what it was used for, picking up the cannon balls and of course the view was amazing

𝘾𝙖𝙨𝙖 𝙎𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙤 𝙋𝙞𝙯𝙯𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙖, 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙖, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙖

We were starving after a full day of walking, running and exploring of Valletta so we decided to try out this cute little Pizzeria that was recommended to us… as little as this restaurant was, the pizzas were not! The boys managed to eat one pizza each but had to take a break halfway and then ended up in a pizza coma afterwards – the restaurant was busy yet the waiter was so attentive and friendly and the food…. Omg the food – de-li-cious!!!… would total recommend this little gem to anyone going going to Valletta

We really wanted to see how the Noble Maltese used to live so we visited Casa Rocca Piccola and wow. Not only does this home have its own bomb shelter… it also has its own Chapel and a little peephole that allows you to look out and watch what is going on in the street without being seen…this is definitely taking curtain twitching to a different level. The tour was fab and we are so glad we did this as there was so much that we learnt along the way – and the parrot in the courtyard was the kids highlight

𝙎𝙩 𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣’𝙨 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙡, 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙖, 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙖

While in Valletta you have to go and visit St John’s Cathedral. There may be a bit of a queue but you can get some delicious street food and then just eat it while waiting… well that is what we did. St John’s Cathedral was built between 1573 and 1578 and is huge. You will receive your own headset tour guide which is very very in-depth … we did skip a bit as the kids were enjoying themselves but we could see their eyes start to glaze over (who am I kidding…. Our eyes were starting to glaze over as well). However, the colours and detail are breathtaking and the view from the top is stunning.

It was our final day in Turkey, the balloon had been cancelled 4 days in a row and we were so worried we wouldn’t get to take the trip of a life time over Cappadocia.. The Hot Air Balloon was initially the main reason for our trip to Turkey. Also to see all the fairy chimneys while walking through the Rose and Red valleys. Cappadocia was a truly magical experience, from a birds eye view in the hot air balloon cruising over the top or on the many hikes through the valleys.
