In the 18th century it became Cyprus' commercial centre, the place where all European consuls established their missions. The magnificent 9th century church of Agios Lazaros, the municipal cultural centre, the Archaeological museum and the Larnaca Fort medieval museum are all worth a visit. In the winter thousands of flamingos, wild swans and other migrating birds can be seen at the nearby Salt Lake. Larnaca is a small working town and therefore attracts visitors all the year round. It is sunny and warm during the daytime with cooler night temperatures between November and March. Public transport is available to Nicosia, Agia Napa, Protaras and Limassol from the promenade area. Should you wish to travel further afield to the Troodos and the mountain villages then a car would be necessary which can be hired locally. The Cyprus Tourist Organisation arrange free walks through the old city. The town has plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to suit all types with plenty of night life.
