IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR BRITISH TOURISTS IN THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS ON RETURN TO THE UK

The Cyprus government is organising repatriation flights from European hubs. We have told the government of Cyprus we would like British tourists to be able to travel on any planes they are sending to UK, which they are now organising at short notice.

We strongly advise British tourists in Cyprus who want to return to the UK to be ready to leave at short notice (in the next 24 hours). We have been informed that the first flight will be leaving on Thursday 9 April at 10.20am from Larnaca to London Heathrow.

The British government is not chartering this flight but we are doing everything we can to assist UK nationals to take it. Seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and will cost a minimum of 120 Euros per person. To book a seat, you should call 8000 8111 (from a Cypriot mobile) or +357 24 00 00 53 until 18.00 today, quoting flight number CY1601.

You will need to make your own arrangements to travel to Larnaca airport.

Please note that this return opportunity is only available to British tourists currently located in the Republic of Cyprus (south of the Green Line) as crossing of the Green Line is not currently permitted. We are aware of the situation of British tourists in the north of the island and continue to seek solutions.

The flight situation in and out of Cyprus is currently difficult, and is likely to remain so for at least the next month as carriers suspend flights. Unless you are prepared for a further lengthy stay on the island, you are strongly advised to take advantage of this return offer.

For those who might prefer a departure from another Cypriot airport or to a regional UK destination, please be clear that this is unlikely to be on offer in the foreseeable future, and your priority should be returning to the UK and making appropriate arrangements for onward travel.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Making your Will
Have you always put off making a Will because you've been too busy? Are you self isolating with time on your hands?

The process can be completed without you leaving your house except to ask a neighbour to witness your signature, which can be done from a safe distance apart.

Making a Will, either UK, Cyprus or both, can be a relatively simple procedure and enables you to ensure that your wishes are set out clearly.

If you have not made a Will before or if you have not reviewed your Will for some considerable time, why not contact us to help you complete your Will.

As an added incentive we will reduce the normal price of our Mirror Wills (husband and Wife) by €100. That’s a saving of 20% off the normal price.

EWMT is proud to announce that the Cyprus International Financial Services Association, (for whom St.John Coombes acts as Chairman) has been awarded UK government funding to provide practical support for UK nationals living in Cyprus with their residency applications. This includes potentially at-risk groups such as pensioners and disabled people. CIFSA will work in collaboration with the Cyprus Registration Planning Group (CRPG) to support those who may find it harder to complete all the paperwork required for residency applications. This includes pensioners, disabled people, those living in remote areas or who have mobility difficulties. This service is provided free of charge to any UK national living in Cyprus who meets the criteria.

Driving in the EU from 1 January 2021:
UK government advice is that if you are resident in Cyprus, you should exchange your UK licence for a Cypriot one before 31 December 2020. Arrangements from 1 January 2021 are subject to future negotiations. If there are any changes, we will update this guidance as soon as information is available.

You can still use your Cypriot licence in the UK for short visits, or exchange it for a UK licence without taking a test if you return to live in the UK.

Exchange your licence as early as you can because your application may take longer than usual to process.

MEU 1 and MEU 3 applications for UK Nationals since the Referendum Top 15,000

According to the Cyprus Ministry of the Interior around 15,000 British nationals have applied for Cyprus residence since the BREXIT referendum. There are currently 25,945 registration certificates, MEU 1
and 6,336 Permanent Residency Certificates, MEU 3, in force and issued to British nationals living in Cyprus.

The exact number of Britons residing in Cyprus is unclear; however it is believed that up to 70,000 British nationals, currently live, work or are retired in Cyprus.
This means that up to half of all eligible UK nationals resident in Cyprus have not applied to live legally in Cyprus.

Since Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, under Cypriot Law, EU citizens including UK nationals, who are not Cypriot citizens, are required to apply for an MEU 1 after 4 months of residence and an MEU 3 after 5 years of residence.

At present there are 32,281 UK nationals with Certificates of Registration. These include 7,801 UK nationals who have applied for Registration Certificates,
MEU 1, and 6,946 who have applied for Permanent Residency Certificates, MEU3, since the BREXIT referendum in 2016.

Of the applications for MEU 1 made since the referendum,
• 4,009 applicants were by individuals aged over 55,
• 1,711 applicants were by individuals aged between 40 and 54,
• 1,177 applicants were by individuals aged between 25 and 39,
• 330 applicants were by individuals aged between 18 to 24

Of the applications for MEU 3 made since the referendum,
• 6,195 applicants were by individuals aged over 55,
• 101 applicants were by individuals aged between 25 and 39,
• 47 applicants were by individuals aged between 18 to 24

Of the applications made since the referendum,
• 3,638 applications were made in Paphos,
• 1,250 applications were made in Limassol
• 1071 applications were made in Famagusta district
• 812 applications were made in Nicosia

There are currently around 400 applications for Registration Certificates being considered and a further around 150 for Permanent Residency Certificates in process.
With these large numbers of requests for registration, the process typically takes up to 30 days for Registration Certificates, MEU 1, while Permanent Residency Certificates, MEU 3,
can typically take up to six months. The department is working hard to process all applications and many people receive them far more quickly.

Over the same period, more than 700 British nationals have applied for Cypriot citizenship. The highest number of applications ever recorded over such a period.

If you have not applied for either an MEU1 or an MEU 3 the British High Commission and the Ministry of the Interior strongly recommend that you do so in order to:
1. Legalise your status in Cyprus
2. Ensure that after the UK leaves the EU you can continue to live work and be retired in Cyprus.

11/09/2019

The British High Commission continues to encourage all British citizens to ensure that they have their residency status in order.
There are three main residency statuses that British expats are entitled to: an MEU1 (registration for residents living in Cyprus for more than three months), the MEU3 (for residents who have lived in Cyprus for more than five years), while residents who have lived in Cyprus for more than seven years can apply for citizenship.

All Britons living in Cyprus should apply for either an MEU1 or MEU3 to ensure that they are lawfully resident and that their rights continue to be protected post-Brexit.

Do you still hold the old 'pink slip' or a stamp in your passport for your residency from before Cyprus’ accession to the EU (prior to 2004)?

The Civil Registry and Migration Department would like to inform British Nationals that in order to benefit from your rights to Move and Reside Freely within the EU, you are advised to replace the old ‘pink slip’ with the MEU3 Permanent Residence certificate instead.
Applications must be made in person at the local immigration office. Call or message EWMT if you would like more information.

UK State Pensions for EU residents could be frozen after 3 years if No Deal BREXIT

At the moment the UK's membership of the EU guarantees UK nationals who are in receipt of state pensions and live in Europe automatically benefit from state pension uprating in line with the hugely valuable triple-lock.

In the event of a no-deal BREXIT, UK nationals who have retired to EU countries will no longer be guaranteed increases in their state pension three years after Brexit, according to the UK government.

The Department for Work and Pensions announced it had committed to increase the pension benefit paid to those living in the EU each year until March 2023, according to the triple lock rules. Under the triple lock system, the state pension increases each year in line with whichever is the highest: consumer price inflation, average earnings growth or 2.5%.

The statement says,

“The UK leaving the EU will not affect your entitlement to continue receiving your UK State Pension if you live in an EEA state or Switzerland. The UK leaving the EU will also not affect the uprating of your UK State Pension in April 2020, April 2021 and April 2022 if you live in an EEA state or Switzerland.”

There is no guarantee that a new uprating arrangement will be reached with the EU in the event of a no deal BREXIT and today’s statement offers no assurance to pensioners that annual increases will continue after April 2023.

This change would affect current pensioners and people who planned to retire in EU countries post BREXIT.

According to data from the Office for National Statistics, there are currently 220,000 UK nationals aged 65 or more living in the EU.

The new state pension for those who retired after 6 April 2016 is £168.60 a week, or £8,767.20 a year.
