The tradition began with Mr Panayiotis, father of Mrs Katerina, the current owner. Mr Panayiotis aimed to bring the fish tavern concept to Nicosia, where only traditional Cypriot taverns existed at the time. Mr Panayiotis' fish tavern in Ayios Dometios became extremely popular offering fish as a full meze course (fish meze). When Ayios Dometios was deserted during the events and destruction of 197
4, the fish tavern, the family's livelihood and sole means of support, unfortunately suffered the same fate. During those hard times that followed 1974, the whole family in a joint effort re-opened the fish tavern under the name “Astakos” in the Center of Nicosia. Mr Panayiotis gave over the tavern's management to his children, Kostakis and Katerina, who transformed the “Astakos” fish tavern to a high profile establishment, Nicosia's fish tavern that welcomed all visitors and satisfied the gourmet preferences of the most demanding of fish lovers. Political leaders, business men, family men and everyday people could enjoy the flavor and quality of Astakos' courses. When “Astakos” was later relocated, under the management of Kostakis' and Katerinas' children, Andreas and Charoulla, became the “Paragadi” we enjoy today. Paragadi, Cyprus' Mediterranean fish tavern, brings unique gourmet pleasures to all visitors, with respect and high quality service.
