Travel alone or through a travel agency?
If you book a plane ticket online, you could save 10 to 15 euros, maybe even nothing, but you'll have to do everything yourself. You need to spend time searching for the most convenient flight, make the reservation yourself, pay with your credit card, check in by yourself, and learn the specific airline's policies regarding reservations, seating on the plane, carry-on luggage, check-in, baggage, and much more. Some people are familiar with all these tasks and have the time to handle them, while others do not.
However, if something unexpected happens to your flight, such as a cancellation, you will have to deal with it on your own. It's not just about changing the cancelled flight but also everything that goes with it, like hotel bookings, transfers, connections, etc.
On the other hand, if you book through a travel agency, someone else will take care of all these tasks for you, without the need to spend time or make a mistake, such as in the booking name. Nowadays, airlines are ruthless, and any mistake is charged, sometimes more than the price of the ticket itself. However, this will cost you 10 to 15 euros more, which is the travel agency's fee, a fee you might end up paying even if you book online.
The most important thing is that if something unexpected happens to your flight, someone else will handle the problem and defend your rights. They will change your booking and everything else related to your ticket without you having to worry while waiting for a call center to respond or standing in a queue at a desk.
We write all this because, nowadays, unexpected events are quite common. Strikes are continuous (e.g., in Germany) and even when they ultimately do not happen, as was the case two weeks ago in our country, the disruption is significant.
Also, airlines and airports have not fully recovered from the aftermath of the pandemic, as they lack specialized staff and aircraft. Furthermore, the inability of the engine manufacturing company Pratt & Whitney to maintain or repair its engines has grounded hundreds of aircraft worldwide (including in Greece), resulting in flight cancellations.
In the USA and other countries, travel agents are now called travel advisors, and what they do is advise their clients with their vast experience, mainly offering solutions and defending their rights in every emergency. They have the experience, knowledge, and professionalism to do this in today's world, where travel becomes an increasingly complex matter and airlines burden their customers with procedures they once handled themselves…
