OPENING AND EXHIBITION - RUTH MAIER
We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition, which will present the life and fate of the Jewish girl Ruth Maier.
Ruth Maier was born in Vienna in 1920 into an assimilated Jewish family. Her father Ludwig Maier came from Žarošice in Moravia, where Ruth and her younger sister Dita often went on holiday. Ruth had been writing down her experiences in her diaries since 1933.
The exhibition reflects her life changes after the Anschluss of Austria in March 1938 and the radicalization of persecution, including the pogrom in November 1938. The diaries also show how her relationship to her own Jewish identity gradually changed under the pressure of exclusion from society.
In December 1938, her mother managed to get Dita on the list of "Kindertransport" to Great Britain. Ruth found refuge in Norway, where she continued to write her diaries, confiding her thoughts on humanity, justice and her feelings for her close friend, the poet Gunvor Hofmo.
Ruth was arrested at the end of 1942 during a raid on the Jewish inhabitants of Oslo and deported to Auschwitz Birkenau, where she was murdered. Her diaries were discovered by the Norwegian writer Jan Erik Vold while preparing a book about Gunvor Hofmo.
Ruth Maier's diaries were published in Czech in January 2021 thanks to Albatros Media. The exhibition will be complemented by the stories of individual members of her family, which show a wide range of reactions to the ever-increasing persecution and imminent danger. The fates of three generations of the Maier family can be a profound guide to the European memory of the 20th century.

VERNISÁŽ A VÝSTAVA - RUTH MAIER 🖼
Srdečně vás zveme na zahájení výstavy, která přiblíží život a osud židovské dívky Ruth Maier.
◾️Ruth Maier se narodila ve Vídni v roce 1920 do asimilované židovské rodiny. Její otec Ludwig Maier pocházel ze Žarošic na Moravě, kam Ruth s mladší sestrou Ditou často jezdila na prázdniny. Své zážitky si Ruth zapisovala do deníků již od roku 1933.
◾️Výstava reflektuje její životní změny po anšlusu Rakouska v březnu 1938 a radikalizaci perzekuce včetně pogromu v listopadu 1938. Deníky také ukazují, jak se její vztah k vlastní židovské identitě postupně měnil pod tlakem vyloučení ze společnosti.
◾️V prosinci 1938 se podařilo její matce dostat Ditu na seznam Kindertransportů do Velké Británie. Ruth našla útočiště v Norsku, kde pokračovala v psaní svých deníků, a svěřovala jim své myšlenky o lidství, spravedlnosti i city k blízké přítelkyni, básnířce Gunvor Hofmo.
◾️Ruth byla na sklonku roku 1942 zatčena při razii na židovské obyvatele Osla a deportována do Auschwitz Birkenau, kde byla zavražděna. Její deníky objevil norský spisovatel Jan Erik Vold při přípravě knihy o Gunvor Hofmo.
◾️Deníky Ruth Maier vyšly v češtině v lednu 2021 díky nakladatelství Albatros Media. Výstava bude doplněna o příběhy jednotlivých členů její rodiny, které ukazují pestrou paletu reakcí na stále sílící pronásledování a hrozící nebezpečí. Osudy tří generací rodiny Maierových mohou být hlubokým průvodcem evropskou pamětí 20. století.
