Located, surprisingly, in a valley, Kost was originally built around 1371, probably by Benes of Wartenberg, and he proceed to have a long hall and tower erected as a further defensive stronghold .From 1456 to 1634, the castle changed hands many times ( Von Hasenberg, Schellenberg, Lobkowicz) and almost each new owner added something; a renaissance wing,a new court, a chapel, a brewery. Albrec
ht of Wallenstein's plans to turn Kost into a fortified country home were halted by his assassination and the nearby town of Jicin is a testimony to Wallenstein's influence. In the 1800s, there was a serious fire and the castle was turned into a granary. It was inherited by the Italian dal Borgo family in the 1850s though recently it has returned, by marriage, to a Czech family. The castle is known for its five-storey "White Tower" which dominates the structure and for the "black kitchen". There is a display of weapons inside the castle as well as portraits and antique furniture of the Kinsky family. Original furniture belonging to the dal Borgo family can be seen in Humprecht (nearby) as it was not returned to the family. The castle offers a rich variety of events for people of all ages as well as a restaurant at the foot of the castle. Come and enjoy the atmosphere, the beauty of the countryside and the Czech beer!
