One of the most famous romantic poems about the first of May, the day of love.

Máj, which means "May" in Czech, is a very famous poem written a long time ago, in 1836. Think of it as a big, beautiful, and sometimes sad story about love and nature. The poem starts with a description of a lovely night in May where everything in nature is calm and peaceful. However, the story quickly turns into a tale about a young man who did something wrong because he loved too deeply and tragically ends up in trouble.

The poem uses nature to show the feelings of the characters—like how storms might represent anger or sadness, and calm rivers might represent peace. Mácha uses a lot of pretty words to paint pictures in our minds about how intense and overwhelming feelings can be, just like a wild storm can feel.

Máj is important because it shows us how strong love can be and how it can make people do both wonderful and reckless things. It also tells us about the beauty of nature and how our feelings can connect with the world around us. It’s a bit like watching a dramatic and emotional movie, where nature itself is one of the characters!

So, even though Máj might seem a bit gloomy, it's really about the big, powerful feelings that everyone, even a kid might understand one day—especially the bittersweet parts of love and the beauty of the natural world.

večerní máj – byl lásky čas.

Hrdliččin zval ku lásce hlas,
kde borový zaváněl háj.

O lásce šeptal tichý mech;
květoucí strom lhal lásky žel,
svou lásku slavík růži pěl,
růžinu jevil vonný vzdech.

Jezero hladké v křovích stinných
zvučelo temně tajný bol,
břeh je objímal kol a kol;

a slunce jasná světů jiných
bloudila blankytnými pásky,
