Did you know Berlin has a unique traffic light? The beloved Ampelmännchen🚦

Berlin has an interesting connection with traffic lights. Europe’s first traffic light was installed in Potsdamer Platz in 1924. During the division of the country, each side featured its own distinct traffic light figure.

After the reunification, there was an attempt to replace the iconic Ampelmännchen with its West German counterpart. However, this move faced strong opposition from Berliners, leading to widespread protests. This resulted in the inclusion of the cheerful traffic light figure in the city's guidelines, preserving its cult status as a symbol of Berlin's identity.

Did you know that Berlin is almost 9 times bigger than Paris? 😮

With an area of 892 square kilometres, Berlin is nearly nine times the size of Paris. Despite its enormous size, Berlin does not feel overwhelmingly large due to its population density.

With 4,000 inhabitants per square kilometre, the German capital offers a more open atmosphere than Paris, where the density is much higher at 21,000 inhabitants per square kilometre. This makes the city feel more spacious, especially compared to the busy streets of Paris.

Did you know that Berlin has more waterways than Venice or Amsterdam? 😲

While both Venice and Amsterdam are known for their canals, the capital of Germany has more water running through it than either one. As the city is nine times larger than Paris, it is no wonder that there are 180 kilometres of waterways in Berlin. When it comes to bridges though, Amsterdam still outranks either city with over 2000 bridges compared to Berlin’s 1700 bridges.

Due to the Berlin Marathon on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th, the Hop On Hop Off Bus service will be adjusted:

- Saturday, Sept 28: Service available on both routes until 2:00 PM though stops 7,11,12,13,15,16 on the Classic Tour will be out of service.
- Sunday, Sept 29: No service all day.

We strongly advise you to download the City Sightseeing Berlin to see in real-time where the buses are at all times.

In 1990, 118 artists from 21 different countries contributed to this extraordinary project, creating 106 unique murals that capture themes of freedom and unity.
