Obtaining a Visa
Bulgaria is a member of the Schengen Agreement but has not yet fully implemented it. For EU and EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) citizens, an officially approved ID card (or a passport) is sufficient for entry. In no case will they need a visa for a stay of any length. Others will need a passport for entry.

University of Veliko Turnovo

Program Overview
The University of Veliko Turnovo is one of the major universities in Bulgaria, re-established in 1963. It has 11 colleges: Business Education, Fine Arts, History, Law, Math and Computer Science, Philology, Philosophy, Public Health, Theology, and a Center for Physical Education and Sports. The university has additional campuses in the cities of Vraca and Pleven. The total number of students in Veliko Turnovo is approximately 11,000. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in 64 fields of study. It is fully accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education in Bulgaria. Veliko Turnovo is in northern Bulgaria, 160 miles east of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

The program is designed for students interested in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and to students interested in Balkan Studies. Experience has shown that this offers excellent preparation for students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in ESL, in applying to the Peace Corps, or in seeking employment in the field of international education. The academic program provides immersion in Bulgarian culture and language, as well as the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an English instructor. Required documents for Bulgarian student visa application:

Photocopy of Passport valid at least for one yea (the first page of the foreign travel document);
Acceptance letter (certificate stating that the applicant is admitted as a student in Bulgarian university plus the Certificate from the University stating that the applicant will be accommodated in the student hostel);
Medical insurance valid for the EU member states for the whole period of the trip, covering all costs for repatriation and for urgent medical care and emergency hospital treatment for the period of the stay indicated in the visa.
Bank document issued on the name of the applicant to prove that tuition fee has been paid (in generally for half of annually tuition fee).
Colourful photograph 3,5 cm х 4,5 cm against Wight background (the same holds for a child entered in the passport) – a full-face photo with clear, large enough face which takes up 70-80% of the photo; eyes must be red; the following is ineligible: photos with dark glasses; non-professional photos or cut out of amateur photos
Tickets (original and copy) or ticket booking confirmation or financial means
For under-aged children travelling without their parents or trustees the following documents shall be submitted:
a. Copy of the birth certificate
b. Original and photocopy of a power of attorney notary certified by both parents/ trustees or by one parent trustee that they agree their child to travel unaccompanied by them.
Photocopy of the last Bulgarian and Schengen visas or visas for the UK and the US, if any.

Even if visas are not required by visitors from same countries for visit up to 90 days, all students from non-EU / EEA and Switzerland must have entry visa to study in Bulgaria.

To study in Bulgaria, international student can apply as undergraduate, graduate, PhD, exchange, transfer or simply visiting student depending on the program he is interested in. Bulgarian higher education institutions are open to all international students who hold a secondary education certificate that makes them eligible for higher education in the country in which they have received their secondary education.

Undergraduate students

Who can apply

To study in Bulgaria, an international student can apply as undergraduate, graduate, PhD, exchange, transfer or simply visiting student depending on the program he is interested in. Bulgarian higher education institutions are open to all international students who hold a secondary education certificate that makes them eligible for higher education in the country in which they have received their secondary education.

Undergraduate students

For transfer students, a Bachelor or Master degree (according to the program the student he is applying for) plus the transfer credit transcription of marks is required.
Transfer students are students who already have passed some period of study at another institution of accredited higher education and would like to continue their education in Bulgarian university and obtain a Bulgarian diploma.
The duration of their study depends on the period already completed. Upon graduation, they receive a degree (Bachelor or Master), according to the chosen program.

ERASMUS students
For exchange students in ERASMUS Program, the period of study is for 3 to 12 months as it is contracted in the Bilateral Agreements.
Visiting students
For students who would like to take separate courses not leading to a degree, he should gate information from the university for relative courses.

Medical University Admission

Medical University Admission: most of medical universities in Bulgaria have both English and Bulgarian programs (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, midwifery). The first condition to get into medical study in Bulgaria is to have secondary school diploma with at least 62% maximum results in accordance with the grading system in the respective country in biology and chemistry (for general medicine, dentistry and pharmacy), 62% in biology (for midwifery and nursing).
Medical University Study Programs in English:
1. General medicine study – 6 year programs, full time six year course of training in the specialty of Medicine which is structured in 2 years of pre-clinical study, 3 years of clinical study and one year of state clinical practice (internship). Successful graduate’s students are awarded a diploma of Master’s Degree is conferred to them along with the professional qualification Physician.
2. Dentistry study – 6 year programs, full time six year course of training in the specialty of dentistry which is structured in 2 years of pre-clinical study, 3 years of clinical study and one year of state clinical practice (internship). Successful graduate’s students are awarded a diploma of Master’s Degree is conferred to them along with the professional qualification Dentistry specialist.
3. Pharmacy study – 5 year program; full time 5 year course of training in the specialty of pharmacy which is structured in 2 years of pre-clinical study and 3 years of clinical study. Successful graduate’s students are awarded a diploma of Master’s Degree is conferred to them along with the professional qualification Pharmacist.
4. Midwifery study – 4 year programs; successful graduates students are awarded a diploma of completed higher medical education of Bachelor’s Degree along with the professional qualification Midwifery;
5. Nursing study – 4 year program; successful graduates students are awarded a diploma of completed higher medical education of Bachelor’s Degree along with the professional qualification Nurse;
6. Healthcare Management Study- 4 year program;
7. Preparatory course of English – 1 year program;
The English medical study students have to attend compulsory classes in Bulgarian language (5 to 6 hours a week) for the first three years (Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy), first year (for Midwifery and Nursing) of training in order to be able to communicate with patients in the University hospital throughout their clinical studies. Note that some students decide to follow first one year preparatory course of Bulgarian language.
