The Call of the Forest
Heute ist #WeltTourismusTag! 🙌🌎 (english below)
Zur Feier des Tages haben wir unseren neuesten Film „The Call of the Forest“ veröffentlicht, der uns in den ecuadorianischen Amazonas führt.
Jede Minute gehen weltweit 42 Hektar Regenwald verloren.

Sometimes, the most spontaneous decisions get you to the most incredible places. The choice to detour through Sangay National park, into the Ecuadorian Amazon was definitely worth the detour!
Until we got to the big river crossing, we didn’t know if there was actually a way to cross it. We actually stood there, at the river bed, for quite a while until we saw the „tarabita“ rushing down - and we realized that we’re at the wrong spot to hop on. We rushed over just in time, and the locals that got off the cable car seemed to be quite irritated by us (and we were equally confused as of how to ride this thing).
It was a lot faster than expected and I wish I could go again - so much fun!
Nevertheless, once we got to the community #Salasaka we really enjoyed some „time off“ of adventuring and watched and learned about their community. One thing I noticed in all the indigenous communities here so far was, that they’re incredibly clean! People take so good care of their surroundings…
The community in Salasaka seemed like a very peaceful place. They introduced us to their rituals, traditional dances and music, and we made food together over the fire.
The best thing for hungry cyclists like us though was probably the breakfast the next morning. They prepared so much rich, traditional food for us (like corn and beans and fruit) that we could barely get up the hills afterwards 😅

Meet the Cañari culture from the Andes in Ecuador! This stay was probably the most insightful and heartwarming one so far… Santiago and his family made us feel like we’re part of their community from the moment we arrived.
Next to Spanish, they speak their native language „Kichwa“ (which is not Quechua!). In their community, mostly everyone wears traditional outfits and the women wear white hats.
It was really inspiring to see how in this community everyone works so well together and people are really helping each other. Every weekend, they have a „minga“ which is a communal „getting things done“ kind of event. All trash is being picked up, and projects like road improvements tackled. How great is that?!
Most of the families own a few cows which are all milked by hand every day. Twice! So much work 🙉
Further up the mountain lives a herd of alpacas, owned by the whole community. And, random fact, every few weeks is alpaca-nail-trimming day. To catch the alpacas they make a big human-Hand-held-circle around the alpacas and then walk in together until they can get a hold of them.
I could keep telling you more about all the fascinating things I learned about their way of living, but then I’d be running out of space soon.
So - if you have the chance to visit the cañari community, I can’t recommend it enough ❤️

Bikepacking is a challenging, but so rewarding way of traveling. On our way north from #Patagonia we were confronted with all the weathers, so much beautiful scenery - and every day something unexpected happened.
I was so grateful pause the adventure in southern Peru for a while to visit two social, educational projects. I ended up staying 4 nights at Qosqo Maki, in Cusco, which offers an open space with different educational programs for kids every day. They try to help teenagers from the streets as well, to give them more perspective on life. Make sure to check out their own cafe too (probably the best pain au chocolate I’ve ever had 😇)
The second project I visited, OYE Lena, is a bit outside of Cusco. Actually a great starting point for the long distance hikes that start there towards Machu Picchu (like the Salkantay Trek or the Choquequirao).
At the project itself I was so impressed to see what Stefanie, the founder, managed to create. At a huge property they offer a big range of programs for kids from the region and I was invited to participate. There’s options of camping or sleeping inside, but camping is definitely a great option 😌
Hope I can come back one day to visit these projects again!

Hi everyone, my name’s Mel and for the past 5 months I’ve been bikepacking through Southamerica.
It’s been an absolute adventure so far, crossing this continent from Patagonia until Bolivia - mainly by bike - and I’m so excited for the stretch ahead of me!
As I’m super passionate about getting to know local communities and always try to travel as sustainable as I can I am very grateful to partner up with @socialbnb as an impact ambassador.
Throughout the next weeks I’ll visit several accommodation projects on my way to the north of the continent to learn even more about the local culture (and of course to rest my legs from now and then 😉).
I’m happy to take you on this exciting journey with me!
