The age of 87 years could not fade the brightness from the face of this ‘Khumi’ woman. Additionally, she made a huge ear piercing by wearing this big earring from her childhood named ‘Kono’ to make herself more beautiful. In Khumi society, the beauty of women depends on the size of their ear piercing.

Khumi is one of the 11 indigenous people community who lives in the hill track of the Southeast corner of Bangladesh with an almost 2200 population. They are the 7th largest community in this hilly and forested area.

This unique indigenous community usually believes in Animism and keeps a decorated bamboo as a sign of worshipping in front of their houses they make on a platform above the ground. They also plant cactus plants around their houses to protect themselves from ghosts and bad spirits.

A bordering village with the Sundarbans forest, land of Bengal tigers.

An approx hundred miter canal divided them with the jungle. The tigers cross the canal and attack the cattle and the people as well almost regularly. The story is the same as with other 75 villages that share a border with this mangrove forest.

Almost all the families make their bread by catching fish inside the forest because most of them do not have any land for cultivation and land is also not fertile because of saline water. To do this job, they must have to fight against natural disasters like cyclones and tropical storms besides the crocodiles and man-eating tigers.

All they have is the boats, nets, and obviously the courage they got from their ancestors who established their habitat in this area around 200 years ago and, nurtured by the hunger for food.

All the men and women wait for their beloved husbands, sons, fathers, brothers for their come back who went into the jungle with uncertainty. They all know some of them will never come back. But, they have let them go who came back again for the next moon.

A Monkey Tree

Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is the only Old World monkey species that reside in the Sundarbans, the World's largest mangrove forest.

They live in groups of 10-25 members consisting of a 4:1 female-male ratio lead by a male monkey. They have their own communication system with different facial expressions, vocal signals, posture, and gestures.

People in Bangladesh have to live by struggling against natural disasters like cyclones, floods, and riverbank erosion all year round.

More than 120,000 people are displaced by river erosion every year in Bangladesh.

It is not easy to leave where they were born and grew up and get a place to live and manage their bread. Most of the rattier get shelter in some slams in Dhaka and have to live an inhuman life.

This house of Nasima Begum in the photo washed away in the Ganges river last night. Her husband went out to find a place to move. By this time, she is cooking their lunch in her broken kitchen.
