SOUTHERN BIG SUR HIGHWAY 1 SLIDES UPDATE

UPDATED ESTIMATES FOR REOPENINGS OF THREE SLIDES ON HIGHWAY 1

MONTEREY COUNTY – Crews continue to make progress with repairs at three major slides on Highway 1, the first of which is located some six miles south of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

The Dolan Point Slide (Post Mile 29.5) is the northernmost of the three slides. Due to additional measures being required for rockfall mitigation, Highway 1 at the Dolan Point Slide is now estimated to reopen in mid-May. Next week, crews will blast large rocks on the slope above the roadway which were exposed when debris material was removed. The reopening will follow installation of a cable net drapery system over the face of the slope above the roadway.

Repairs at Regent’s Slide (PM 27.8) are still expected to be completed 100 working days after crews initiate repairs. All environmental clearances are nearing approval, and with the approach of drier weather conditions, a start date is feasible within the next three weeks. Given these conditions the estimate for reopening Highway 1 at Regent’s Slide is early fall of this year.

Due to delays caused by the 2024 winter storms and additional slide locations along the coastal highway, it is now estimated that Highway 1 at Paul’s Slide (PM 22) will reopen in summer 2024. Crews are making cuts in the slope to prepare for final alignment of the roadway. Survey and design of the final alignment, installation of new drainage systems, and preparation for roadway reconstruction will also begin in the coming weeks.

Daily convoys continue through Paul’s Slide and a midday convoy has been added. In order to allow for students north of Paul’s Slide to attend a full school day, a new convoy schedule will be in effect starting Monday April 15, with convoys at 7:45 am, 1 pm, and 4:15 pm.

Note that as roadway construction and drainage installations accelerate in the coming weeks, it is anticipated that the 1 pm convoy may be eliminated so that the final push to reopen the roadway can proceed with minimal stoppages.

Das Death Valley erwacht so langsam wieder.

On Saturday, December 23rd, Death Valley National Park will reopen 95 miles of roads, including access to popular destinations like the Racetrack and Ubehebe Crater!

The Racetrack is famous for tracks left by moving rocks on the dry lakebed. A lake was present for at least a month after Hurricane Hilary. Now the lakebed is dry again, so people can walk on it without causing damage. No vehicles or bicycles are allowed on the Racetrack.

The roads will finally open after they were heavily damaged by flash floods caused by the remnants of Hurricane Hilary back in August. Many of the park’s roads, including Racetrack Road, are only suitable for high-clearance vehicles. Many park roads remain closed until flood repairs are completed. Mesquite Springs Campground will likely open before December 31.

Hier deutlich zu sehen: Es ist nicht der normale Schnee, der die Tioga Road so lange unpassierbar macht, es sind die vielen Lawinenabgänge. Es wundert mich, dass sie bereits jetzt damit beginnen, die verschütteten Abschnitte zu räumen. Da rutscht doch bestimmt was nach! Aber vielleicht ist gerade das erwünscht, damit es nicht später passiert.

Liebe Leute, ihr könnt aufatmen. Der Klimawandel hat auch etwas Gutes. Die heute vor fünf Jahren bekannt gewordenen Pläne, bei Moab einen weiteren Colorado-Stausee zu errichten, sind angeblich vom Tisch. Wegen des Wassermangels lohne es sich nicht, den Colorado auch dort aufzustauen. Trotzdem solltet ihr den großartigen Anblick auf dem Hwy. 128 durch die Colorado-Schlucht besonders genießen. Wer weiß, wie es heute in einem Jahr nach einem schneereichen Winter in den Rockys aussieht!?

Im Death Valley gibt es immer noch viel Neues zu entdecken.

T is for Telephone Canyon!

Located on the northwest side of Tucki Mountain, Telephone Canyon is named for the telephone line that used to run through it. The line connected two of the most influential mining towns in the Death Valley area’s history: Rhyolite and Skidoo, which were 50 miles apart.

Although the telephone line has long since disappeared, those who wish to explore off the beaten path can still hike up Telephone Canyon. There, explorers will have the opportunity to see remnants of old mines and the well-named Telephone Arch.

When visiting backcountry sites, it is important to be well-prepared. Always plan ahead, carry detailed maps, and let someone know where you are going. Many backcountry roads including Telephone Canyon were severely damaged during recent flooding and conditions may be drastically different from usual. Check for current road conditions at the visitor center before traveling in the backcountry and remember to save low-elevation exploring for the cooler winter months.
